Does anyone know if a P38 lightning will ever grace our skies in the near future.

Interesting about the Merlins. I remember reading in Ray Wagner’s “Mustang Designer” that Edgar Schmued was so disappointed with having Allisons on the F-82 that he never bought another GM product again!

I have heard several rumours that “Glacier Girl” might be visiting the UK this year……
(Mind you, I heard the same rumours last year as well!)
Can anyone add anything definite to this?

I think at one time on this great forum we talked about a project to put Merlin’s on a P-38. However the powers that be in Washington did not follow through with the project. I believe I have read in some books and here on this board that the Allison engines had problems in the cold weather in the ETO ? If the USAAF needed long rang escorts in numbers to protect the daylight Eighth Airforce raids, guess they tried and did not like the results of the P-38’s performance. Or needed it in the Pacific..I know I would feel so what safer over enemy territory with two engines and all that upfront fire power of the P-38. Hope that one day Duxford will have a flying P-38 on display!

There was a thread about Lefty Gardner’s P-38 “White Lightnin'” being bought by Red Bull a while ago. Will be the closest we’ll get to having a P-38 gracing British skies, I imagine.
