Thank you Belforte.

So at least they do not appear to have any $100 donations and in 2011 and they were out of pocket. I wonder what they spent the $128 on? Hardly a trip to Wales!

Let’s hope it stays that way I am sure that nobody on this forum have or will make any donations.:D

I have been in contact with Matt Rimmer and am pleased with the opportunity to work with him as needed to preserve and display the Maid , including a personal visit to meet him at some point. As I said, since my retirement July 1st I can devote more time to this project. Many folks in the UK are deeply interested in this project and in fact, I was contacted by The Cambrian News this past week and they pounced on the opportunity to publish an article on the Maid, which appeared Thursday. We wanted to keep the Maid in the public eye an also be positive about it. TIGHAR did a magnificent job on the survey. Now we want to build on that.

This was Robert Elliott’s last post on the TIGHAR forum November 16, 2013. ‘The Director’ never responded to Mr. Elliott after that comment. Draw your own conclusions.

Indeed how much they have raised and give that amount to any viable group who actually does something.

Paul, certainly you jest, that would cut into the excessive 200K+ salary the ‘Director’ takes from the ‘non profit charity’. As they say, “charity begins at home”.

I think they should say how much they raised in $100 donations off the back of this paper exercise

According to the IRS 990 filings, in 2010 and 2011, $0.00 and nothing reported in 2012, 2013 or 2014. Appears that most funding went into the ‘Earhart Project’ and some ‘To Save a Devastator’ for what reason nobody knows. They won’t be going after those TBD’s in Jaluit Lagoon.

Why did Mr. Rimmer get involved with Tiger in the first place? Ignorance of how credible they are?

Matt Rimmer and Robert Elliot have not been involved with TIGHAR since November 2013. They have found that the ‘Paper TIGHAR’ isn’t what she used to be or ever was for that matter. The P-38 on Harlech Beach is far beyond TIGHAR’s capability, both financially and mechanically. Name one plane that TIGHAR has ever found much less preserved in 30 years. There ain’t no beef on their bones. All talk and no show.

It seems one of Rimmer’s last posts on TIGHAR was his swan song there.

Though this is a rather controversial statement to make, the history of historic aircraft recovery is littered with the wreckage of best intentions, recoveries carried out without better planning or enough funding for the long term care and preservation of the subject aircraft, the best known of these being the B-29 “Key Bird” but there are many others. I for one do not wish to see The Maid as a broken pile of wreckage on the beach, or a rapidly corroding hulk in some yard, or being hacked apart piecemeal for want of more time.

I also think it’s time that silly name (maid of harlech) was purged from the thread. Pretty please mods. I don’t see the harm in getting involved with Tighar, in fact if they want to help me recover a Whitley from the English Channel I would be delighted.

It is some time since Tighar had any input at all, and no longer have a license to recover it as far as I can tell. Accordingly, can I just suggest that we forget that they ever had any input, and not use them as a reason for others not to get involved.

It would be quite nice if we could forget the stupid name they gave to it as well..

It’s understandable that the locals want to keep their landmark but they can’t, the sea will have it.
This is like a glass with a hole in the bottom, the beer is trickling slowly out and being lost but picking it up will greatly increase the loss rate, drink it and it’s gone. So everyone watches the beer dribble away and finally no one will have anything. We can’t have it it must be left there so future generations can’t have it either.

Agree.

Move it on shore and clean and preserved, or let nature take it back.

Or encase in giant snow globe.

no other option.

But, but, gents (and ladies), we shouldn’t even know where it is according to TIGHAR “but until she can be rescued from the sands of time, her actual location must remain confidential.” https://tighar.org/Projects/P38/welshlightning.htm Has anyone told The Daily Post? Have they infringed the TIGHAR ‘D Notice’? Are we even allowed to know where Wales is?

The article only repeats what was previously spouted by the media, and to save people searching for it here’s the direct link http://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/harlech-site-wrecked-air-force-10217004

Thanks Rocketeer for the Python reference,I have had Python moments during several digs..recovery projects, there are aspects which are very surreal.
Also thanks for giving the P38 matter some thought, unlike the traditional view of archaeologists this is an artefact which will not remain presesrved for future generations if left in the salty sandy sea bed.

I don’t see this as sad at all SA99. I think you can’t save everything, and this aeroplane is better left to go its own way.
We get too romantic by giving the corroding lump a gender and a fanciful name. Let it slip away, and appreciate the other P-38’s we have on our planet…
