As my last thread is locked I will post here. The P40 just returned with wheels up before doing its run and break for landing after avoiding a Cessna over Ware in Hertfordshire on its return from Wellingborough.

Exactly What I was thinking. Why create a new thread about a p-40 doing a “run and Break” to land? You could just put it the “Spotted for 2012” thread.

What a pointless thread!! As far as I can see and read….the P40 came back….did a run and break with wheels up (the only place the wheels should be) and then landed fine….so no issue, am I being thick?

No it got done safe and well
Do you know what a “run and break” is?

So you’re saying that it did a run & break with the wheels up….
No it got done safe and well

Tankbarrell was responding to the sub-conversation about the WW2 incident.
Indeed, I could have made that clearer!

His range would be somewhat less with undercarriage down.
Then he could land at an airfield that has no avgas – Still all will be well, just like the hurricane wheels up that never happened………………….
Cosby was wasnt it 😉

Just FYI… he took off from a carrier in the Med, and was leading the Hurris to the island of Malta.
There WAS NO AIRFIELD between the two, just lots of deep water!

various undercarriage problems
There was a spate of undercarriage problems on certain Buccaneer aircraft, all in the same serial number range. The 1st thing we as groundcrew used to ask the pilot, (with a straight face of course), was had they pushed the button hard enough?
There was always the possible explanation, that the problem was caused by the “seat-joystick interface”.

The Vampires were on their way to Leuchars.

Just heard the 2 Vampires and photo aircraft will be airborne shortly to Thurrock
They came through Dx a while ago. Always lovely to hear and see Vampires here 🙂

Does the P40 use a Power Push system, I tried and faild to raise the U/C once untill I remembered to push again.
I also remember at a fighter meet that someone in the Harvard formation team landed back and then realised the mistake on why his gear would not come up.
One of those things and not a sign of bad piloting or system failure.
I must admit I had to read the post a couple of times to work out nothing had happened.

They must have detoured as they have just flown over Ware heading towards Royston. Could they be on route to DX by chance?
The photo ship went to the East to hold and was joined by the Vampires then all headed back N/West cleared to a “secret frequency” as the pilot of the Twin told North Weald, The Vamps were given a radar slot for the return home after the shoot.

Why didn’t they land at Malta too? Or, why not land back on the carrier? After all, the U/C was down.
Confused?
I get the impression the Hurricanes could not land back on and would have just orbitted waiting for the lead aircraft to take off again. With wheels down the lead aircraft could not reach Malta. Not sure why they didn’t have a spare just in case though?

You want to come here, you get Jets doing circuit and bumps all day without retracting the gear, it is to cool the brakes and wheels as they go round the circuit…

I read the story of a Skua (or possibly a Fulmar) that was guiding Hurricanes from the Ark Royal to Malta. When the aircraft took off it found it could not retract the u/c. Knowing that he would run out of fuel and have to ditch in the sea, but also knowing that the Hurricanes would not be able to find Malta and would just circle the carrier until they also ditched as they had been ordered to wait for the Fulmer / Skua, he decided to fly close enougth to Malta for the Hurricanes to navigate on their own and then ditched.
Pretty brave if you think about it. Don’t know what happened to the crew?

As I said, no reason to spread rumours when there were no problems.
Bruce
“Rumours”… I stated a fact in my thread and was Asking a question in my title how is that starting Rumours? I posted tongue in cheek somewhat as history and sticky levers came to mind watching the P40 take off but it seems it went over the head of some people but not all I am glad to say.:diablo:
