I read in a book about 6 to 7 years ago, forgot what book now…- just after VE Day, the 8th Air Force were goiong back home (don’t know the date ‘fraid)
A lorry turned up at Nuthampstead, asking who was going home. a bunch of the 8th had a P & W in the back of a truck which was meant to be transported some where or another – but it never got to its destination,, they jumped in the truck and dumped it in the woods adjacent to the airfield, drove back then jumped in the truck to take them to the docks, Liverpool I suppose a WW B17 or a 24, who were the lads, are the boys still with us, is it true? I have been there and walked through the woods, could be any where I know, Email if you wish privetely, If it ain’t true, it still sounds 1945 ish exciting,

Probably the pikeys had it a long long while ago :p .
If the woods were Scales Park then these were cleared back in the 1960’s, along with a substancial amount of ordnance I hear, I love these tales, I was once talking to a Gamekeeper from that area who swore blind the fuselage of a Lancaster laid at Nuthampstead for years after the war.
Our Travelling friends take anything, they took the Heinkel Engines that had been unearthed from Spelbrook near Bishops Stortford in the late 1960’s too!.
Best of luck!.
