From another website… the part in bold????
P-47 Thunderbolt. Armor not only behind but underneath the pilot, 8 Browning .50s, a P&W R-2800 with an intercooled GE CH-5 turbosupercharger, water-methanol injection, built in crash skids in the lower fuselage, maneuverability that nearly matched or exceeded its rivals despite its enormous size and weight,, mind-boggling speed in level flight(56th FG pilots reported 500+ mph with their P-47Ms) the ability to take an unparalleled amount of punishment(see Robert S. Johnson) and of course, the all-important ability to dive away from a fight while in trouble or reel the enemy in when they tried the same.
Huh???

Correct.
They do have such an item.
Mounted below the main fuel tank on the bottom of the fuselage.

He now says:
It’s incorporated into the airframe, under the skin. Have a look at Squadron / Signal Publications’ P-47 Walk Around and P-47 in Combat.
Is he refering to the longerons? or possibly the exhaust run to the turbo?

Reads like something out of “Sky Captain & The World Of Tomorrow”…..;)
Looked over a few cutaways and the image of the “skinless” P-47 at the factory, can’t see anything – mixed up with the A-10 and its semi retracted wheels maybe?
