Apologies for yet another Spitty thread…
I was wondering if anyone has any photo’s of the battle damage repairs on the wing of BBMF’s baby Spit. I’ve had a close look at her a couple of times in recent years and never been able to see the patch-ups,and I’m wondering if perhaps they’ve been lost during the course of successive overhauls etc. The commentator at Legends was saying that the repairs were still visible,so perhaps they’re still there?

Hi. My first post so please be patient with me. P7350 had, in the mid ’90’s, two repair patches still evident. Both were in the upper wing skin only. One was, interestingly, larger than the other. They were both insert type repairs and flush with the upper skin. Why different sizes? Apparently, one was machine gun size, the other being 20 mm cannon size ah la ME109. Why the upper skin only? The lower skin had been replaced due to an ‘incident’. I’ll see if I can find a picture to help.

I doubt that – 44-72035 was assigned to the 364th FG 385th FS 8th AAF at Honington and was coded 5E-B
After VE-Day, this ship was returned to the US.

Just passing on what he told me, I wonder if Janie has any more info? Certainly has a patched hole on the fuselage side.

Peter Teichman’s Mustang was a Tuskeegee veteran.

Peter Teichman’s Mustang also has bullet hole repairs and, in case anyone didn’t know, was a Tuskeegee veteran.

Thanks for taking the trouble to dig that shot out Scott, much appreciated. I have to admit I thought it would be a bit more obvious than that, now I know why I haven’t been able to see them before.
Does anyone know of any other airworthy or static warbirds with battle damage repairs still evident?

I’m sure in one of the books there is a close-up of what looks like a round patch on the upper surfaces on one of the wings. The caption states it’s a repair patch, anyway.
Daz,
Correct, in one of Jeremy Flack’s books (Flying Legend IIRC, the first one) about the Spitfire with all the colour images there is one showing the patches clearly.
