PA474 Markings

PA474 will surely be up for a change of markings in the next year or two, im sure fluffy will let us know if this is the case, what would eveyone like to see her marked up as next if it was your choice?

I think Lancmans choice will be pretty obvious 🙂 but after that i think it would be intriguing to see what people would prefer.

Im still thinking about my choice 🙂

The tie-up with RAFM could be a good thing, but I’ll go along with a few others here and say it would be better to paint her as Q-Queenie rather than as S-Sugar.

Q How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?
A no one knows its never been tried.

But I digress, I still vote for Q-Queenie. However as long as she is flying I’m really not bothered. How about a late 617 Sqn daylight scheme, I believe it was similar to a desert scheme (carried on some Grand Slam equipped a/c). Not very likely but I can dream.

Ok,here’s my tuppence-worth…
Sticking with the Commonwealth theme AND the idea of depicting a machine which failed to return, how about RA542 “JO-Z” of 463Sqn RAAF. She was lost in a raid on an oil refinery at Vallo in Norway on April 26th 1945,making her (it’s said) the last Lanc to be lost in action over Europe.
For those who would like to see her as PO-S, the good news is that RA542’s markings were almost identical, with red code letters outlined in yellow, with the code letter repeated on each fin.She appears to have had colourful (and unoffensive!) nose-art too.
Perhaps it’s possible to please everybody afterall. 🙂

And ‘he’ talked to Joan of Arc, not the British…

Anyhow – never say never, and again, let’s remember there were quite a few Frenchmen fighting in Bomber Command too. And for those with a propensity to heave rocks across the channel, I think a little less criticism might be in order; luckilly Britain has not been occupied for quite a while; and the French had an appaling time from 1940 to 1945 – and beyond. A little walk in those shoes anyone?

Cheers

Very well summed up re. the ‘Sugar’ scheme there Fluffy; okay, so it’s my personal ‘dream scheme’, but that reasoning would work very well officially!
Just think of all the lovely merchandising that the RAFM could get out of it- promo posters, with ‘Sugar’ flying over the Museum…where ‘Sugar’ lives!

Mind you, as long as that lovely satin is kept, I don’t mind what it is! 😉

You didn’t say why the service has been put back? (Unless we’re not allowed to know!)

It has been very interesting reading your comments about different schemes for the Lanc, and I take the point about having her represent a Lanc that only did one or a few sorties and didn’t return.

I believe that has been done already as SR-D 101 SQN and KM-B 44 SQN and as she has only been in six different Squadron markings, including the two already mentioned, it is very hard to please everyone, all of the time.

I see no problem in having her represent S for Sugar 467RAAF Sqn
if we decide to go this way, as it will be remembering all the commonwealth crews that gave their lives during the war, and also it would be a good liason between BBMF and the RAF museum.

The Lanc will never be painted in a French scheme or post-war Canadian scheme because of what BBMF stands for.

New colours have been given to PS915 ( 81 Sqn far East), and P7350 is now correctly painted!

Ah, DB,

Guess I did misunderstand you! No worries. As you say, it’ll be honouring the Bomber Command men, and I quite agree.

Of course if we ask Dan nicely, we can have any PA474 scheme we like on the forum!

Cheers

Let’s be realistic though, it’s only ever going to be in bomber colours.

Scarlet with Coca-Cola across the underside of the wing.:D

Seriously, i’d like to see it in either all over silver with a extra dark sea grey top or all over white with black underside.

It is gratifying (for me anyway) to see Spitfire PV202 being restored in its correct Irish Army Air Corps markings with a proper blown rear canopy.

I can’t wait to see it airborne.

Hey, c’mon DB, that’s a bit unfair.

1. Red bull sponsor the Vixen. I don’t like the drink, I like to see the Vixen fly. Alternatives seem to be a bit thin on the ground. I accept it. Also, at least it’s different. I’m not up for a pro- con argument, if someone don’t like it, put up the money, or shut up or stay away. All choices each of us has! 😉 Those wanting another Red Bull argument, please take it to another thread. Ta…

2. Thanks to the French, we have at least 3 more Lancs than we might have had – including NX611, ‘Just Jane’ Bull Creek’s machine in Western Australia, and the one being restored into French Aeronavalle colours at Le Bourget. That’s going to be a tasty scheme.

I don’t think Aeronavalle for PA474 is at all likely, but I’d be happy to see it. Don’t forget that the Shuttleworth collection’s Hind was in Afghan colours for a couple of seasons as a ‘thank you’; and the Norwegean scheme on the Glad has made it my wife’s favourite aircraft. Foreign schemes on British aircraft are all right with me!

Cheers

How about one – just one – of the Lancs that didn’t come back from their FIRST raid.

Too many to choose from.

Now that is a good idea. The Lanc is, after all, a monument to those who did not come back and there could be few more poignant ways of showing that.

Good call young man.

The fact is it wont get painted up like the Hendon one as Sugar still exists.

Thats entirely my point, dont paint her as Sugar paint her as Queenie, she stands as a monument to those that flew her on her many missions but onbly represents about half of them.

Yeah, I DO kinda know that, sadly…

It would look bloody brilliant in the air though, and would be great for the RAFM.

This will get me a big time slagging off from some people on here but

Why not paint the Lanc up like a French one from the 50s

Or a Coastal Command one.

The fact is it wont get painted up like the Hendon one as Sugar still exists.

Does that leave the front 5% or rear 5% unpainted?
