One thing that has always surprised me-or perhaps, just made me daydream-is that there’s never (to my knowledge, anyway) been a video dedicated to the the history of BBMF’s Lancaster PA474.
While there are some very good Lancaster titles out there-‘Pilot’s Eye Lancaster’ and the BBMF-related titles by Primetime being good examples-I think it would be great to have a full history of the Lanc on film.
What I’m getting at is that surely there must exist in-flight footage of her days as a flying test bed, still in her African 82 Squadron finish with that laminar flow wing on top of her fuselage? And then perhaps there is footage of her very earliest days as a display aircraft-her ‘one flight only’ from Henlow to Waddington, her first occasional display flights out of Waddington etc etc. There must be a lot of archive of her here and there-I’ve certainly seen clips of her in her very early days from Pathe news-and wouldn’t it be great if someone researched what there was, gathered it together and did a full video on her, ending in the present day?
This would surely be a good seller for the BBMF/Linc Lanc Association, who after all still sell the very excellent, but chronically out of date, ‘A Lancaster At Peace’ by her early nav, Ray Leach. When that was written, she’d not long had her mid-upper turret fitted and her codes were AJ-G!
So come on someone, let’s have ‘PA474-The Movie’ if you please!!! 😀

Nice to hear somebody getting back onto the actual subject of this thread!!!!!!!!!!

PA474 the movie
I agree that there should be a video/DVD on the history of what for a long time was the world only airworthy example of this magnificent machine. As a 15 year old Air Cadet I had the chance to work on the BBMF for a week on summer camp and have always been a fan of the lanc I for one would buy the video of an aeroplane with such a varied history as ‘City Of Lincoln’ PA474

Anyone wants a copy of a one of the last WW I’m happy to supply from the few spare I’ve got – if you donate £5.00 or more to the Mark Hannah burns unit. Details in the Mark Hannah thread. Happy to discuss which issue and contents, but any was worth having.
Cheers

Ah, yes Warbirds Worldwide – I miss the anticipation of finding the reinforced envelope in my post box every 3 months. Ian, I think you would have bought it! 😀
A wonderful publication with high quality pictures and articles – expensive but worth every penny.
I had the pleasure of talking with Paul on the stand at a Flying Legends and exchanging emails on several occasions (some after a contentious posting on the WW forum!)
Sadly missed.

Fair point Ian.
Just to clarify. Warbirds Worldwide was a journal not avaliable at the newsagents – subscription only. The marketing undertaken was very tightly targeted. To answer your point, ask around. Most people involved with Warbirds got it (or borrowed a mates’ copy) and I’d say 90% of Warbird workers were aware of it in the UK – and outside the US (a very complex market) this stat would still be true globally.
Do borrow a couple of copies if you can – it’s still worth reading!
Cheers!

Can I suggest that there may be another reason which contributed to the demise of Warbird Worldwide: poor advertising. I’ve never even heard of the magazine! I’m not saying I would definitely have bought it, but I might have done if I’d seen or heard of it. 😡

BBMF Personnel are currently evaluating a beta version of a CD Rom that is about all the Lancasters that are in existence at this time.In due course the CD Rom will be available. I believe that BBMF are aware of your idea and will look into it.

I’m sure you put your money where the Lancs are – just using the example. Thanks for being a stout chap about the spotlight.
As to a PA474 movie, why not float it with the BBMF? They’d know of what footage there is / was. Issues over copyright could be sidestepped legally by making it a fundraser and asking film owners to donate. I think it’s a good, but difficult-to-pull-off idea. Go for it.
If you wanted a book, I’ve got a publisher…

Point well taken, and in my defence I’ll say that I bought FlyPast regularly for about 15 years, before it finally got a bit too jet-heavy for my liking. (The Delve period!) I’m buying it more again now, and have just been out and bought the new one- the Lanc content is great, surpassing the amount of coverage I was expecting by far.
Back on topic, does anyone else agree about the video idea?

Thanks Yak 11. I was that Asst Ed, and I burned many hours of midnight oil. However, I enjoyed it, am proud of my what it was. Those that told me how great it was and that they really, really enjoyed reading their mate’s copy did get a steely eye.
Paul Coggan worked incredibly hard, and took some tough decisions at the end for minimising damage to people and companies that he never got credit for. Thanks too, to to all those who contributed – including one Mark Hannah.

Incidentally, someone was asking recently why Warbirds Worldwide folded. Lancman (sorry to point you out old chap) has unintentionally answered that – if you don’t buy it, it goes bust (eventually). If all the people who raved about WW actually bought the issues when they came out, rather than later, it’d probably still be going. Mags aren’t expensive chaps. (rant over)

Well said James,
I subscribed constantly from issue 3 including special editions (having bought 1 & 2 from Airshow stands as they were released) and was constantly impressed with the magazine content. I was saddened when it ceased not only because I missed the publication but also for those who worked so hard to produce it.
A few years have gone by now and I guess there are a whole new bunch of enthusiasts who were maybe not interested in Warbirds at the time who have found the publication and are trying to build their collection up (and no you’re not having my collection).
Warbirds Worldwide is much missed.

24 page special feature on Lancaster survivors – and a centre spread of the CWH Lanc in flight – go on, you know you want it……………….:D

Sounds like a great idea.
To see PA474 Pathe footage , and if you are finding the forum a bit boring one day (unlikely I know) have a look at http://www.britishpathe.com/index.cfm and plug a few aircraft names in. There’s some great airshow footage too.

Actually, I haven’t even picked it up yet mate! But I hear it’s Lanc-heavy this month, so I may actually have to go and buy it for once!!! 😮
