PAAMS/ASTER Renamed "Sea Viper"

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/pound650m-navy-warship-arrives-in-portsmouth-1518167.html

….”The ships are to be armed with a new hi-tech missile system renamed today as the “Sea Viper”, formerly known as the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS).”…

Quentin Davies, minister for defence equipment and support said: “The newly named Sea Viper, a world-leading missile system will allow the ship to detect her prey, target it and issue a deadly strike.”

I think it’s a Navy thing. They’ve always named all their missiles.

But yes, I agree – the proliferation of acronyms is completely out of hand, particularly (but not exclusively) in the USA. Everything is “Joint” (even if it isn’t) or “Advanced”, or the like. One obvious problem is, what do you call the replacements? Assume for the moment that a new missile replaces the ASRAAM. “More advanced short range air to air missile”? Even more advanced . . . . “? “Super advanced . . . “? Same with AMRAAM, of course. Or JASSM, or JSOW – what comes next?

Pro, Premium, Deluxe, Gold, Titanium. . .:D

Didn’t like the name when I first heard about it, I’m starting to think its okay now though.

I’m surprised they managed to keep it quiet for as long as they did.

The joke is, with the exception of JDAM among the Joint series, they ended up being quite Disjointed. 😀 Let’s see if the next Joint missile, JCM ends up like JASSM and JSOW.

Well if you’re on the receiving end, it’s not a pleasant thought.:D

Yeah that’s pretty much what’s going to happen to you if you are. 😀

Now if they’d just rename “ASRAAM” 😀

Does anybody else think they ought to go back to naming missiles? JASSM, ESSM, JSOW, RAM, AMRAAM, PAC-3, THAAD, etc. get’s REALLY old.
