US to offer help in defence sector

WASHINGTON–The US will offer Pakistan its help in various defence spheres, including professional training, exchange of experts, joint conferences and introduction of new ideas and plans for strengthening military-to-military relationship, sources in the Pentagon have revealed.
The US might also offer Pakistan — one of its key coalition partner in the war on terror — military ground equipment, and also upgrading and enhancement of some PAF aircraft, it is said. The offer is likely to be made in a meeting in mid-summer this year, though specific details are yet to be worked out. The only US-made aircraft in the PAF inventory are F-16 multirole fighters, and C-130 transports, while the Pakistan Navy has P3C Orion long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
“`The Pak-America Defence Advisory group’s meeting, its 14th, will either be held in Washington or Islamabad,” a source said, and added that both the venues were open.
“The US will finalise all specific details and it will might be some kind of package for Pakistan,” the source said. “The US Government understands Pakistan is anxious to upgrade its military equipment”.
Another source in the Pentagon said the US did not want to build up a huge military set up in South Asia on a permanent basis, while its limited military presence in Pakistan was important in the wake of the war on terror in Afghanistan. Sources, however, admitted that China and Russia had some reservations about the US military presence in South Asia. “The US Government is in contact with the two countries,” the source said.
As far as the Pakistan-India issue is concerned, the source said the armies in the two neighbouring countries were on a high alert, though both agree going to war was not a solution. “They both agree there was no military solution but democratic,” the source said.
