Part identification assistance 12.04.16

Earlier today Newark Air Museum was asked for some assistance in identifying a possible aircraft part that has been recovered during the clearance of a drainage ditch in Nottinghamshire.

The metal carries the following part numbers (please see photo attached):

44038 169
CM5

Any leads / ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The latest feedback from contacts at Brooklands is that Vickers Type no. ‘440’ is for the Wellington Mk X, which could tie in with the previously mentioned loss.

A check on the Varsity @ NAM yesterday, identified a similar sized and shaped panel, which is located underneath the engine nacelle and just to the rear of the oil cooler.

Any further thoughts anyone?

Plus for clarity the panel is not for sale and is going on display with the Laxton Local History Group in the famous Nottinghamshire village.

Thank you for that feedback, which would possibly tie in with the following loss nearby:

“The Wellington aircraft that was lost was LP841 from No.82 OTU (Operational Training Unit) flying out of RAF Ossington, Nottinghamshire; it crashed shortly after take-off at 5pm on 5th January 1945 and wreckage fell into the South Field at Laxton.”

The incident is commemorated with two memorials in the village, which were featured in the Notts Aviation Memorials booklet.

The details have already been forwarded back to the local history group in the village.

Relatives of one of the crew members visited the museum last, when they were visiting the UK from Canada. Thanks again.

440 is WellingtonIII, not sure if taken in the context of that number, nearest I know to 169 is 168 T6G so maybe not a lot of help, for sure looks like aircraft related.
