Passenger Numbers Grow at Teesside (DTV)

Compared with March 2004, the March 2005 passenger figures for Durham Tees Valley grew by 37%. Whilst we’re still very small, that is a cracking growth rate.

From the DTV website:

Durham Tees Valley Airport has today announced that passengers using the airport in the month of March increased by over 37% in comparison to the same month in 2004.

Over 65,000 passengers passed through the airport in March with both established and low cost services showing significant growth.

Low cost airline, Ryanair carried almost 7,500 passengers on the daily service to Rome which since commencement in January has proved very popular with locals.

The scheduled service between Durham Tees Valley and Aberdeen showed an increase in passengers of more than 11% in March. Eastern Airways, which took over the popular route in November 2000, has become one of the key partner airlines based at the Airport, establishing an excellent business schedule flying to Aberdeen 4 times daily every weekday and once on a Sunday. Flights with bmi to London Heathrow also showed double digit growth with an increase of 26%.

Based low cost carrier, bmibaby had its busiest winter month with over 17,000 passengers using their services. The award winning airline commenced new flights to Paris and Cork (the only direct service from the North East) during March in addition to popular destinations of Malaga, Palma, Alicante and Belfast.

Richard Whitehouse, commercial manager, Durham Tees Valley Airport, said β€œThe Airport continues to provide the local community with a range of destinations and services for both the business and leisure markets. Airlines such as bmibaby and Ryanair and operators such as Thomson Holidays who are introducing three new destinations to Corfu, Tunisia and Gerona for this summer are providing the airport with significant growth over the coming year”.

The beginning of May will see a further boost for the airport with The UK’s biggest tour operator Thomson Holidays flying their biggest ever programme from for Summer 2005. The operator will base an aircraft at Durham Tees Valley Airport for the first time and introduce new services to Corfu, Tunisia and Gerona.

The airport also welcomes Cypriot specialist operator, Libra Holidays who has announced a new direct flight from the airport to Larnaca, Cyprus for the Summer.

Some things that the PR article doesn’t say however is that the BMI Heathrow flight has now reduced back down to 3 daily (daily on Saturdays). The based TUI aircraft in essence replaces the based JKK aircraft of last year. And the so called new Helios flight to Larnaca actually replaces the JKK (and previous to that MYT/AIH) Wednesday Larnaca flight. So a lot of this so called big news isn’t that big when you dig around it.

Still, good news for DTV; lets home the current growth continues. πŸ™‚

A bit of a history for you from a park and go website:-

http://www.parkandgo.co.uk/teesside-airport-history.html

Teesside Airport started life as an RAF base for Bomber Squadrons during the Second World War. From its earliest use in 1941 Teesside Airport, known then as RAF Middleton St-George, housed bombers for both the British RAF and the Canadian Air Force. When the war was over the base was used for advanced flight training purposes, and remained home to RAF Squadrons.

In 1957 work began on improving the runway and airside buildings, but by the time the work had finished in 1963 it was decided that the airbase should close. By early 1964 the local authorities had taken over the sight and set out plans to turn it into an airport for civil use, and excellent choice as the site already had well developed facilities.

Around 1.5 million pounds was invested in the airport, in order to re-equip the airport, build a passenger terminal and build an on site hotel. Work was completed and in 1966 Swedish royalty officially opened the airport. The first scheduled service from Teesside Airport was to Manchester Airport, ever since then the airport has added more services and flights to various destinations.

The best I can offer you is the connection to Middleton St George (that at least gives you the ‘M’). The airport was originally an air force base of Middleton St George (a village near Darlington).

How do they decide what a airports code is going to be? you get the simple onces such as GLAsgow and MANchester but MME for Teesside and AGP for Malaga?

LOL – I honestly wasnt sure! πŸ˜‰

MME is the original and best, l like codes that seemingly have nothing to do with the name of the airport (e.g MME, AGP).
