dark light

Pathfinders

I am almost too young to remember the Thames TV series Pathfinders, (I have a hazy vague memory of darkened bombers, that’s all) but I just found this webpage with an episode list, with cast, crew and basic plot synopsis:

http://www.angelfire.com/retro/cta/UK/Pathfinders.htm

This alerted me to a few things I didn’t know before”
– it was in colour, which is a bonus;
– it was made on film – which is another real bonus
– it seems from this list, looking at the cast list, that each episode focused on a different crew entirley and their on self-encompassed story. Is this true? I have guessed from the list that they are all different crews but from the same squadron under the control of Robert Urquhart as Wing Commander MacPhearson.

I would love to see this series. As there were only 13 made, and being Thames they no doubt all survive as their archive is much, much more intact than most other British television companies, I think it’s a must to release in a DVD set. What do you guys and girls think? Good idea? Even if one or two are missing from the archive it won’t matter so much if they are indeed all self-contained stories without an ongoing story thread as such, as I have assumed.

Does anyone here remember the series or have articles about it? Or pictures? Which Lancaster/s were used? Which airfields? Was there much aerial footage? Was there a lot of use of models? Were the special effects good or bad, like when the Lancs ditched in the sea, etc?

Overall, how would you rate the series, 1 being total crap and 10 excellent?

Damn, it sounded like it had so much potential on paper. Oh well.

If you ever feel like disposing of your copy Neilly, let me know. I’d still like to see what it was like, even though it sounds terrible. Sounds as disappointing as A Family At War was when I finally saw that series.

Thanks for the advice, Neilly.

I’m an out and out Lancaster/Bomber Command enthusiast but I have turned away from every opportunity to buy one of the vids just because you know, with it being a 1970’s t.v. series, that it will almost certainly be blind, bloody awful.

And now you’ve confirmed it, thus saving me a potential £2 mistake at the car boot!

I seem to recall that the series was only ever aired in a few t.v. regions, another sign that it wasn’t up to much?

Hi Dave,

I made the mistake of buying one of the videos to this series (because it was cheap). I’d forgotten how awful (I would’ve used stronger words but…..!) this series was. Don’t waste your cash.
And the score would be -10 (It would’ve been lower, but for the scenes with flying Lancs!)

Happy New Year to You,
Neilly
