My carrier based anti-submarine squadron was changed to a land based intelligence gathering unit. We patrolled the waters around Cuba while the Russians were building a missle base just 90 miles from the U.S. Read more about it on http://dickblizzard.blogspot.com The U2’s were taking pictures from 80,000 feet. Our S2F’s were at eyeball level (100 feet).

Wright 1820 engine
Great engine. However, if it suffered an over-boost, it would fail a few days later. High manifold pressure at low rpm always caused problems. Not unexpected. In five years, the only problem I had (except for an exhaust stack fire) was a jammed and bent valve push rod. One jug was out, the aircraft was vibrating. We shut it down an landed on an 8,000 foot runway. Read more here http://dickblizzard.blogspot.com

Just read the story about the Russian Tug and the Cuban Patrol Boat, I agree, how did they miss you? The Stoof is a grand plane and I am happy that 4 of our old fleet will see a new life in Brazilian service.
I’d love to own a COD version for a private venture- forget the PT-6 engines, leave the old Wrights in I say. For me, you aren’t flying until you fly in a prop with a decent engine!
