I have asked this kind of rhetorically elsewhere, but it’s bugging me now. Is there a recongnised formula by which statements such as ‘70% original’ when referring to restored aircraft are actually measured?
What I mean is, if you were to count component parts regardless of size then the replacement of nuts, bolts, washers, rivets etc would make many ‘authentic’ aircraft actually less than 50% original. So it’s not that. Is it by volume? Weight? Surface area? Replace the original fabric on an old biplane, suddenly you’ve reduced the combined surface area of all original components by a great amount, say 50% – is the aircraft 50% less original as a result? So its probably not that, either.
Any thoughts? Maybe the BAPC have guidelines over such claims to originality?
