Colour

I must admit to being a little puzzled as to the Yellow. But I know Tony had many contacts for his colour references. So presumably the cigarette card was either wrong or an earlier scheme.

The following photos from Christies Thursday 11th February 1999 catalogue.

And changed to Black and White.

The yellow is quite a possibility. A friend of mine has returned the mortal remains of a Vega Gull to the UK and has commenced rebuild to flying condition. This Gull was dispatched direct to Australia in 1938 finished overall in a glossy primrose yellow with mid to dark blue markings. What a pretty aeroplane that will be on completion.

The Christies url made me think. Tony Woollett, the builder, was a friend of mine and he meticulously researched his subjects. I also have the Christies catalogue from the sale of his models prior to his sad death so I will scan the catalogue picture. There were about 50 scratch built models in 1/36 scale in the auction.

Many thanks for the replies, I didn`t know there was a cigarette card of this particular Gull, I have attached a picture of the plane I have bought, wing span is 72″. I am considering changing the scheme to that of G-ACFY, I have been on evilbay and bought one of the cigarette cards.
Found this on a search which may give a clue to the colours? http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/LotDetailsPrintable.aspx?intObjectID=1443424

” I have a coloured photo of Gull Four G-ACFY. This is as on the Skybirds box lid, but in reverse – medium/dark blue overall with white trim. The letters are in the usual positions for the period, on fuselage sides and across both wings. 3 flashes on fin, and fuselage stripe from nose to tail, continuing through fuselage letters. The nose cowling panel incorporating the air intake is white, the spinner is blue, cabin framing silver, also prop blades, the latter with blue tips. Note that on early production Gulls like ‘CFY and the one on the Skybirds box the undercarriage has 3 struts; later aircraft had a single strut.”

…and two pics

I would go for Turquoise and Silver as these were the Percival colours. The David Gearing book shows a colour side view with a darker Blue and White but contemporary photos don’t back this up though one appears to be Turquoise and White.

Pretty certain this Gull was an overall dark blue with cream markings. I have a book of players cigarette cards from the 30’s somewhere at home, I am 99% certain this is the Gull depicted. One would assume when the cards were printed each closely represented the type depicted. Static model or R/C?
