Personal Plane Services update

Hello Folks,

Not many posts at the mo so I thought I’d brighten things up with an update to let you know the current goings on with us at PPS.

The MKI Spit is coming along very nicely, Retro have finished the engine and prop testing, we hope to have both with us at Booker in the first few weeks of Jan. Once the refurbed bearer is delivered then things get interesting as everything is ready to hook up firewall-forward. The 10″ wheels are currently being worked on, as are the backplates for the brakes and screen/hood. As you can see in the pic she’s looking like an aeroplane again as Mark12 can attest 😉

Still searching for the following though:

Type ‘B’ Voltage Regulator

http://thumb8.webshots.net/t/59/659/4/47/96/2441447960034695728yycGMu_th.jpg

and the Throttle Contactor Switch

The Harvard’s paint scheme is due for a change which we’re hoping will revert it back to its 8 SFTS BCATP scheme.

And we had an arrival from Russia recently, keep your eyes out in the news sections of the various mags this month 😉

Paul,

You’ll find that it’s not listed as a ‘P’ but as a ‘U’ model, it was only when it arrived at Booker that we deduced that it was in fact a completely different model, the ‘U’ having some surfaces skinned in Ply and the ‘P’ being built for longevity in the postwar years as opposed to the mass numbers/short life thinking behind the WWII production of the ‘U’ model so it used an all metal construction to stave off the woodworm 😉

There is a picture of her in this months Aeroplane Monthly…

“Yakity yak…
Don’t talk back”

(c) The Coasters

Says she was ex Russian Gate Guard – Has anybody got access to the Classic Wings Yak articles and see if a Yak 9P is mentioned… My copies are in storage… David M????

Yak is ex Kubinka AFB, Russia. It was apparantly used as a demonstrator aircraft at one time which allowed it to survive long enough to remain today, no mention of it being a gate guard at any time, but possible.
It was being restored for a Russian individual, but was passed on to a U.K. firm (remaining in the ‘East’) before being coming to PPS.

Paul – I havn’t spoken to her owner for a day or two but the story was that she is ex Hungary .

Perhaps the writer of the caption in AM was misinformed… or made an incorrect assumption. 🙂

Tom what colour scheme will AR213 be finished in or is this a guarded secret?:)

This old thread http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=19550&highlight=ar213and the photo at the start of this current thread showing Dark Green/Ocean Grey wings should give you a clue. Before anyone asks – the upper wing roundels are not going to be light grey – that is the primer showing through where the roundel positions were marked off and masked prior to spraying the camouflage. The rest of the aircraft paintwork and all the details will be applied once the restoration work is finished.

It’s been too long since we’ve seen the Mk1, It’ll be great to see her in the air again.

Tom, thanks for the info. I’ve heard tha the tailwheel tyres are getting to be like rocking horse droppings too, I guess that is the problem that comes from keeping 60+ year old machines going.

Right, where to start…

David, as Scotavia mentioned, we were not the only ones taking photos, there were at least 3 or 4 others with cameras, not to mention the people with camera phones  The funny thing is that we hadn’t said a word about it before it arrived, then the day before it was scheduled to be delivered a spotter on the gate calmly asked one of us “..when is the Yak-9 turning up?” I have a feeling they have good contacts in UK Customs….

GliderSpit – We’re hoping to start engine runs in a few months, got to get that bearer first before we can even think about dates.

T6flyer – The Harvard is FH153/G-BBHK.

mike – Bizzarely enough it’s easier to find a 10″ tyre than a 10 1/4″ as many of the Biz Jets use a 10″ tyre on the Nosewheel, only problem is that you can’t get a plain tyre as would’ve been fitted in service, hubs are a different story though, the words ‘hens teeth’ spring to mind though the 10 1/4″ hubs aren’t exactly common nowadays.

Thanks for the feedback everyone and the kind comments Daz 🙂

I would think that tyres for 10″ a/c wheels would be rarer than hen’s teeth by now or are their a lot of other types using the same size wheels?

She arrived in the U.K late November through Tillbury docks ( courtesy of ISO). She is ex Hungary from memory and might not stay in the U.K. I hasten to add she isn’t airworthy but could be with some $ spent on her.
