There’s a need for this in a country where everything isn’t an easy day’s drive apart….
Pet Airways begins scheduled service next month.
The concept is simple, pets fly in an exclusive aircraft..in the main cabin, not stowed in a passenger jet cargo hold. mThere is a vet tech on dusty serving as a flight attendent. Pets will be kept in secured/tied down crates.
The first cities are: New York (NJ,CT & Philadelphia),Washington DC/Baltimore Area,Chicago,Denver, and Los Angeles. Others may be added later.
The cost? $245…A bit more than checking a dog & kennel on a commercial flight, but not that bad. Especially since some airlines charge the extra bag fee, then a cargo fee on top of that.
Plus, you have the peace of mind knowing the pet is secure and not baking or freezing in a cargo hold.
Here in North America, the temperature extremes can limit when you can fly with your pet. Most airlines won’t let you ship a dog if its over 85 degrees …or below 40 degrees ouitside. Trying to get a dog in/out of Phoenix in the summer is virtually impossible, and getting my champion-quality basset into DFW from his birth kennel in Vermont took careful planning.
My two bassets have flown a bit…and while airlines looked after them very well (Delta put Douglas’ kennel in their DFW operations center after he landed to make sure he was cool..that caused a few anxious moments when I wentto retrieve him at their cargo agent’s facility and they didn’t have him) and I saw Alaskan baggage handlers talking to Wilbur during a transfer in Seattle..but I could still hear him hown from the hold before they started the engines. Also, we had to wait for a connecting flight with a Q400, their Fokker jets cargo doors were too small for his medium-size kennel) having them with a specialist operation would be nice.
The aircraft is a Beech 1900…
Here’s their website…good luck to them.
PS.I’d rather fly with them take another Easyjet flight!
