Peter Green has passed away

This morning the following sad news was posted on the NAM website, about Peter Green who passed away yesterday – blue skies Peter; it was a privilege to have known you.

“Earlier today the museum was notified of the sad news that Peter Green passed away yesterday (Tuesday 16th December, 2014).

Peter was a noted aviation historian, photographer, author, long-standing museum member and museum Vice-President.

In the late 1960s / early 1970s Peter was one of a group of local businessmen who ensured that Newark (Notts & Lincs) Air Museum was properly constituted and achieved charitable status. He was also one of the team of people that negotiated the granting of approval for an official site on the Newark Showground and started the museum out in a respected and professional manner.

In 2011 the Peter Green Research files, which comprise 70 folders of data relating to all British aircraft and manufacturers, were added to the museum archive. Up until quite recently, as peter was working on another project, the museum curator often received a telephone call from Peter asking for something to be checked in those files.

During the last few years despite being house-bound, Peter remained a wise counsel to the museum staff and trustees, and his knowledge and passion for many aspects of aviation will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts go out to his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Peter Green was very generous with his time and he shared his resources with many – not just with authors and publishers but also with ordinary enthusiasts.

My own pet project was first put on a firm footing by Peter, who kindly granted me access to one of his rare resources and then helped me transcribe the data. I doubt I would have got anywhere with his generous help.

Some years back Peter was one of us invited to North Coates aerodrome to watch a fly-through by the Bristol Blenheim. He recalled the first time he had seen a Blenheim close up had been at North Coates in 1938. He had cycled from his Grimsby down a farm lane and watched the Blenheims through the hedge. As that lane was later removed when the airfield was expanded he noted we must have been a only few yards from the same spot some sixty-odd years later.

A true gentleman who will be sorely missed.

I believe it’s safe and I certainly haven’t heard anything to suggest otherwise.

As mentioned in the OP, seventy (70) of his research files came to Newark several years ago.

TwinOtter23

I assume his photo archive is in safe hands.

Just looking at the recent Osprey Combat Aircraft – RAF Canberra Units of the Cold War features quite a few of his collection.

Cheers

The last time I spoke to Peter was about eight weeks ago when he called me to discuss a couple of things related to NAM. As ever he offered wise words that helped provide another view of offers that had been made to NAM. He seemed as bright and cheerful as ever!

Prior to that his photographic archive was taped into for a couple of the Lincolnshire aviation trails and I also did telephone interview with him regarding his memories of the Canberra coming into RAF service at Binbrook; this piece was published in Aircraft during 2011.

I have only just read this sad news.

I met him at least once, and certainly enjoy reading his work in his (and Delve/Clemons) Canberra book

R.I.P Peter

I have known Peter for all of forty years and you wouldnt find anybody more willing to help with research and photographs. He was one of the small band of people who set up the Lincoln branch of Air Britain. Even in later years as his health progressive failed he was as enthusiastic as ever. RIP Peter it was a pleasure to have known you

During the last 24 hours I have received some wonderful emails about Peter and also some nice phone calls; and everyone has commented about what a “true gentleman” he was.

As I said in the OP “it was a privilege to have” known him and looking through a couple of books in the NAM Archive this morning it struck me how often those familiar phrases came at the end of a photograph credit “P H T Green Collection”, or “Peter Green Collection.”

I’ve known Peter for a lot of years – he was always bright and cheerful, but recently it became harder and harder to get a smile or chuckle from him. Always helpful, and happy to share, it was a pleasure to have known you mate!

Another doyen passes; very sad – he must have reached a good age. :apologetic:
He was involved as a historian / photographer / preservationist amongst other things aviation for a very long time indeed and was greatly respected.
