Peter O'Toole Has Died

Peter O’Toole, in my opinion, one of the greatest actors ever, has died:

I have reflected on my earlier comment on his stage acting and must revise what I said. Whilst he had several flops, which perhaps overshadowed his better work, his cockney Bamforth in The Long and the Short and the Tall, his Baal and much later his Jeffrey Bernard in Jeffrey Bernard in Unwell were very fine performances indeed.

I always liked him…he was one of the last of the great group of post war (Burton, Harris, etc.) UK-Irish actors.

…and Eleanor Parker and Audrey Totter passed away last week, too.

As usual, the Bard has the appropriate farewell to them all:

Goodnight, sweet prince/And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest

‘The Wild Geese’ is one of the best ‘rubbish’ films ever made! Some of the great names of British cinema, and some great little performances, but not Peter O’Toole sadly.

Yes, a blooper, it was Richard Harris, and I have lost count of the times I have watched it on my DVD. I must write out 100 times, “I am a Pillock”……:D

No he wasn’t but Richard Harris, O’Toole’s great friend, was…

Yes, I figured that was the confusion…..another great actor.

I agree, although I would insert film before greatest…

I never saw him on the stage so my assessment is only based on his film work…

…in fact I’ve just been looking-up his film roles and there are depressingly few that I rate.

‘Murphy’s War’, ‘Zulu Dawn’ and, of course, if he had made no other film, ‘Lawrence of Arabia’.

Time to give ‘Becket’ and ‘The Lion in Winter’ another chance!

No he wasn’t but Richard Harris, O’Toole’s great friend, was although he died several years ago. Perhas Linc was confusing the two.

I.M.H.O. One of his best rolls was in, “Wild Geese”.

Do you mean ‘The Wild Geese’? He wasn’t in that was he?

I agree, although I would insert film before greatest. He did good stage work but not exceptional – film was his metier and he enjoyed success in his latter years as well. A great character as well as a fine actor.
