Archer,
The CAA have allowed non-standard fitment of a spinner to a Hamilton Standard Hurricane prop (originally Canadian Hurricanes flew with Ham Std props with no spinner), so I can’t see fitment of an earlier-type spinner to original spec being an airworthyness issue
Mike J, thanks for that! As I said I was just playing Devil’s advocate as I’m no expert on getting Hurri’s certified, but if they allowed this before then indeed it shouldn’t be a problem this time. I guess that leaves the money issue, perhaps coupled to the fact that there are no examples around to copy, as Anneorac pointed out.
I’ll just sit back and anxiously await the first flight photos now! It’ll be good to see her with air under her wings!

As far as I know, there are no blunt Hurri spinners (I think that’s the CM/1) left anywhere. Rather sad but their you go…don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone…Oh dear. That will be me singing about yellow taxis for the rest of the day.

That’s great news, another Hurricane is always welcome! Pardon my ignorance, but who’s Peter Vacher? It’s a name I’m not familiar with.

JDK “What about the Science Museum’s, and the Battle of Britain Hall RAFM ones? (Just a guess)”
IIRC,the Science Museum’s example has a Dh prop with a pointy spinner while the RAFM example has the longer pointy spinner of a Mk.II.
Whatever spinner it flies with,’PW will be a fine sight to see in the air again. 🙂

I dout they’ll publicise it much until it’s happened. All sorts of last minute snags can happen, many of them well outside the operator’s control but all of them capable of causing a last minute postponement which results in disappointments all round. Far better to keep things low key and then announce the success, than to set the expectation and (for whatever reason) not be able to deliver. Personally, I’ll just look forward to seeing the first flight photos on here when the time comes. 🙂

Oxford would make sence
Peter and Polly Vacher (Aka. MINMERE FARM PARTNERSHIP) are based in that area

ok, if this is the case need to know when to get over to earls colne book a day off college aswell hehe

I flew into Oxford earlier in the year and I was told it would be based there. It may do it’s first flight out of Earls Colne like the TFC Hurricane did.

The rather blunt Rotol spinners used on Mk.I Hurricane during the Battle of Britain are interchangeable with latter spinners. In fact CM/1, ES/6 & ES/9 spinners are all interchangeable. My guess is that it would cost far too much to have a one off spinner made.
Spinners are indeed not cheap to make, but for a restoration like this, I would have thought they would go the extra mile if the blunt type can be fitted to the RX5 hub.
Just playing advocate of the devil, but that still leaves the question of whether the CAA will issue the Permit with the blunt spinner! If ‘The extra mile’ includes convincing the CAA about the airworthiness of a component that hasn’t been seen on an airworthy Hurricane for 60 years, then the newer type spinner would definitively be the healthier option! 😉
Mike J posted a list of airworthy Hurri’s, how many of those use the blunt spinner (none I’m guessing) and how many Hurri’s have used it during say the past 20 years?

anybody know where she will be based heard a rumour of Earls Colne any ideas?

Good information – I was perhaps being a little too simplistic!

Perhaps in the future; mind you, are there any examples left to copy?

Nice to see a 605 Sqn aircraft represented, is there any significance in UP-W being chosen ?
Yep. because she probably ‘earned them’
IIRC R4118 served with 605 Sqn during the BoB
605 Sqn code was UP
So methinks R4118 was indeed ‘W’
Interestingly, I have just worked out her Civil Code is:
G-HUPW
Hurricane UP-W !!!!
So it has ALWAYS been planned to have these codes on here since she was registered in 2001

Archer / Bruce, thanks guys. 🙂

The splines are certainly different for a start. I am unsure of the exact differences, but suspect that the DH prop may be a different diameter to the usual Hamilton props.
What on earth do you want a Hurricane for? I thought the Whitley would be more than enough to keep you quiet for a while!
