Mrs Moggy and I are planning a trip to Lincolnshire next month and the temptation is to book the old 617 Mess at Petwood.
But the online reviews are not promising.
It is always hard to tell if those on TripAdvisor and the like have an axe to grind.
Anybody here been recently and would like to comment? Condition of bedrooms and quality of food are the key points.
Many thanks in advance
Moggy

For what it’s worth my wife and I have used The Petwood quite a few times over the years (last time about 12 months ago) and never had a bad stay. That said we use it for a special occasion and have always stayed in a suite- well worth the investment.
I’m a big fan of Tripadvisor but my favourite hotel in London invariably gets a pasting! If the reviews are mixed you could try The White Hart in Lincoln itself- it too has a history and the advantage of being centrally located so drink/driving isn’t an issue. It’s a while since we used it (and I haven’t checked Tripadvisor before posting) but again we’ve had some nice stays there in standard rooms. You can always call at the Petwood for afternoon tea……

I stayed there 2 years ago when i had a trip in “Just Jane”. I enjoyed the place because of it’s history, however, it’s very dated and smells musty!! The wife was not impressed.

I had a pint there a few years back in the mess. I found the staff were helpful and polite. There were several retired pilots chatting away as I looked into a glass case that housed Wing Commander Guy Gibsons logbook.

They used to do monthly “specials”, which featured a “two for one” deal, including full board.
Me & Mrs Waco really enjoyed our stay and the grounds were lovely.
I would certainly recommend it…
I would say the food was acceptable, no more, no less.
The “Major” was holding court while we were there. It was a pleaseure to say hello.
Go for it Moggy !!!! You know you can afford it !

I turned up there recently unannounced and asked to have a drink in the 617 Squadron bar. The staff seemed friendly enough and as the room was not in use at the time they allowed me in. I did have a meal there years ago and I seem to remember it was quite good. I have never actually stayed there….yet. The atmosphere of the place is worth going there for I would have thought!

BBMF, holds functions there all year round. All good. I have never had a reason to complain, one of the waitresses is OK (my daughter!).

I stayed there in April for the 619 Squadron Association Reunion (yes other Squadrons were based there as well!) – an excellent location and an enjoyable atmosphere. A couple of years ago I organised a 619 Squadron related event and that was based there – again excellent with all aspects of the arrangements!
