I have been drawing pictures now for a very long time and have been pestered by various people that my artwork is worth selling, so I want your opinion on this subject.
You have all probably seen this picture before but not this way. I drew this over the last few days and thought it would be interesting to see what you all thought of it. Please let me know and be honest.
Thanks
Rob.

Absolutely spot on JDK I now belong to several art groups and have learnt so much from people of all standards not just the ones who I consider better than myself, we learn from our mistakes but sometimes we need others to show us what they are, I spend so long sometimes working on a picture that I dont see the obvious things that somebody else spots instantly.
The Guild are a friendly bunch who will help you willingly if you ask.

Great drawings… Could be even better drawings…
I’m, not saying that I’m too good for the GAvA, but I’m happy with the results in which I produce drawing wise and is something I have self taught myself over something like a twenty five year period of drawing. If I start having people tell me that I should do this, this way and that, that way, I would probably not bother doing them again. I have my own style and technique that seems to work for me and from what people have said in the past to me has produced the right results so I think that I will stick with my own methods.
I’m happy doing what I’m doing now.;)
Hmmm. I’m hearing a lot of defensiveness there. No-one’s suggesting you have to do anything, either in joining an organisation or changing your techniques.
However, I’ve yet to hear of an artist of any actual talent or skill (which you clearly are) who’s found discussing techniques with others detrimental to their development; frankly, in most cases, they simply wonder why they didn’t join / share earlier. You WILL find the feedback you get from the GAvA etc. constructive, thought provoking and it WILL develop your skills further and give you skills and techniques you can’t or won’t discover yourself. The greatest artist’s in history knew they were on a lifetime learning experience and grabbed opportunities wherever they arose.
There’s nothing wrong with being self taught, and a lot to be said for it – you’ll probably find a significant proportion of the GAvA membership qualify as ‘self taught’ to a degree as well, but don’t kid yourself you are doing yourself a favour by not playing with others. Respecting your own achievements is great. Making yourself into a mushroom (in the dark, no feedback) isn’t. Unless you are a complete social disaster (if you were, you wouldn’t be here) it’ll be beneficial.
You don’t want to join because you think you’ll get cut up by ‘experts’. (This is the real concern, I suggest.) You won’t. You’ll get a lot of qualified positive feedback and a number of useful suggestions, ideas and techniques that you can please yourself about – but a minimum is it will boost your motivation and commitment, but it will remain ‘your’ art.
Stop being shy, and get going. 😉
Regards,

Fantastic stuff Rob – I could easily bankrupt myself commissioning you to do all my favourite aircraft! 😀
I think I prefer the charcoal look – it’s very ‘atmospheric’.
You’ve a rare talent, make the most of it but make sure you enjoy it.

I know there are a number of other artists on this forum who may be interested in an exhibition you’d be surprised at the wealth of talent out there, how about a forum art exhibition?Robmac
Good work I agree with all the other comments Join the Guild, always lots of good advice etc I too only ever painted for my own pleasure until I joined a local aviation art group and recently the guild, now I get involved in exhibitions etc and get a great deal of satisfaction from talking aircraft/art with a wide variety of people and occasionally sell a few to boot.
eHangar is also a great place to get advice and guidance from
Keep up the good workPaulC
I like the idea of forum gallery:) 🙂 ,however how many people love to see the art “in the flesh”?- if there are enough of you out there who relish the prospect of showing off your artwork, let me know & I will see what I can come up with at Doncaster- after all what better setting than among aircraft.:) 🙂

p.s. I have toyed with the idea of Organising an aircraft art exhibition at Donny Aeroventure for some time -would you be interested?:)

I don’t think I have much choice now Rad do I?:D
I’ve never seen myself as a selling artist really until recently, it was just something I did as a past time and got better at it as the years went on, mind you, I still need to master certain things. Painting with colours is something that I cannot do to save my life!!
Anyway, watch this space cause I’m in the process of another aircraft drawing and I think it will be liked by many.
Off to bed now, just finished a night shift and I’m creamed!!

I looked at the Hunter & thought not too bad,saw these the Nimrod, & Typhoon & thought” for G**s sake man get yersen in the Guild of aviation artists”-there is a lot of budding av. artists out there & these are some of the best I’ve seen.:) Best of luck an’ keep it up.

I think you do very good work and judging from the responses on this thread, there is definitely a market out there who wants your art 🙂
You might sign up over at EHangar.com, an online aviation art site and pick the minds of those that are making a living doing aviation illustrations.
Chris, thank you very much for your referral to eHangar.com 😀
Rob, I invite you to visit the site sometime as we have many artists specializing in charcoal and pencil aviation art. Its a community site where artists share information, tips and tricks and learn from each other. We have a lot of aviation art lovers too who chip in in the various discussions, so artists also get to learn what the buying market wants.
Something else that may or may not interest you: eHangar.com has a Work Critique Room where brave (or reckless!) aviation artists can submit their work for a no-holds barred critique. Egos are encouraged to be left outside the door! There’s also a Ready Room for sharing Works-in-Progress inviting less harsh or more tempered commenting and suggestions by other members 🙂

I don’t think Lindy’s Lad or anyone else is suggesting Guild members will try to convert you into someone or something you’re not. I believe the Guild members are very good chaps who are also very open with sharing tips and their wealth of experience can only help anyone who’s keen to learn. Style and technique are learned and refined over time, and interaction with like-minded aviation artists and learning from them can only improve your skills, I’m sure 🙂
Likewise, less experienced or talented Guild members will also benefit from and be inspired by your work and sharing, so all in all, everyone benefits, which is the main aim of the Guild, right?
All in all, I would say that you’ve got the basic, innate talent for drawing aircraft, but as with everything else, there’s always room for improvement 😉

[QUOTE=robmac;1164017]When you say ‘bonces’, I presume you mean portrait head shots. If you really want to know Kev I’ll show you, but this is an aviation site, so don’t think I shall be making a habit of uploading all of them, but I did this of Angelina Jolie nearly two months ago, so yes, I can.;)

Lol…….you daft sod 😀
Bonce is the name of the furry thing you were stroking up the MAM the other day:eek: 😮 😉

I think I would need to see the original subject matter before commenting further!
:confused:one odd post in 44. How strange really, The quality shines through even with the scanning and low res posting restrictions.
Well worth waiting for the next awesome installment.

Ok, well I have my usually goings on at the museum today as I’m off work for the week, but when I return home tonight I’ll upload the Jag drawing.
Thanks for the encouraging comments guys and especially my good friend Martin (Phantom Phixer) who has encouraged me more than anyone from the start. 😉

Just stunning! 😮
Keep on drawing, because you will get better, and I want to see that, as you are already starting from a much higher level than most people…

You are an exceptional artist. I really enjoy your work.
Congrats from a fellow illustrator

I have recently completed a drawing of a Jaguar for another of the museum members. If you wish to see it, I’ll upload it.
Thanks
I really don’t think that question needs asking. I don’t think you can publish too much of your work here, I’m sure every other reader agrees with me.
Thanks for your time and trouble,
Be lucky

Absolutely stunning work, Rob. You have inspired me to take up drawing aircraft again! The Nimrod is amazing and the shadows have been drawn so well!
