Photo help needed

I am having problems doing close up photos of smallish objects.

I had a similar problem last year with my 35mm compact and now I have the same problem with my digital.

If I stand along way from the thing I am photoing it comes out smallish but if i stand close or use zoom it comes out as shown below so can anyone help me please.
