Yeah, that approach caused quite a stir down here. One of my friends was having a burger at sunset and said the wheels cleared the fence by about 10inches.
I was down there myself 2 days ago, and saw one guy being blown into the ocean by the AF340 taking off. its quite a fun place to watch the not to smart ones get the full blast in their face.
One guy had his brand new digital $5000 camera (or so he was telling just about everyone wanting to listen…before he walked to the end of the runway) sandblasted and the lens came off when he landed on his ass in the sand. Last seen walking to his car with a very red face
All good fun, and a normal day at Maho Beach

I wonder whether either of the chaps crouching down and clinging on to the fence for dear life managed to get a decent shot?
Oh!
SHOT… Had to read it again… :p
Sorry, couldn’t resist.

It’s not even on the bit that means displaced threshold is it? So it’s landed on what is official an area unsuitable for movements?
That’s how I see it too.
It’s amazing that putting a 744 down at that point, that the asphalt was actually able to take the weight.

It’s no fake, Steve.
I’ve seen other shots from the same sequence, and shots by another photographer taken from a slightly different angle that corroborate it 100%.

That’s an incredible shot and an incredible piece of flying by the pilot in charge. That’s a pretty low approach! Brillian!

I’d say it’s a fake….KLM pilots would be far too professional to land that short of the piano keys

Actually my friends have just got back from there and they said it was very scary. The plane actually touched down just after the 2nd yellow arrow that is in the pic… Look out in a few days for the touch-down shot from James Rowson.
Apparently the airport was closed for a while the next day while a few people were taking pictures of the tire marks on the runway

Its probably perspective, the plane is probably higher than it looks, also it is seriously moving, so it will only be a split second before it reaches the threshold & touchdown point.

Perhaps Air France and KLM have an inter company competition….who can make the photographer bounce furthest with all the jet wash and wake turbulance?

Big stepladder!
