Anyone explain to me how the link below to JP’s photo of the week is so worthy of this?
In my eyes almost everything is out of focus! I get that it may be a bit bumpy on finals, but, i just honestly can’t see what makes it a photo of the week?
Not meaning to slag of the photographer, who has other similar shots of much better quality on the database, just really can’t get this.
(JP screeners having too much sherry at Crimbo maybe??)

You have to remember Photo Of The Week is a decision that Chris Kilroy makes, and although some may not think it’s worthy of POTW some people do. Jus like Screeners Choice – It’s a shot that stands out to the screener. If they like it alot it gets screeners choice. I think it’s good that Chris is picking photos over the overall motive than the quality.

Can I throw my tuppenceworth in here? I quite surprisingly got one of my shots as “Photo Of The Week”
I didn’t think it was worthy of that title then and I still don’t now, it’s fairly interesting and from an unusual angle but not that good IMO, but it’s chosen at the time of acceptance as “Photo Of The Week” so I assumed at the time that it was one of the Head Screeners or indeed Chris Kilroy himself that screened it, and well, liked it.
(Edited to remove the link – I don’t want anyone thinking I’m fishing for “hits” 😮 )
I rarely snap these days and I can’t be bothered with sites that pander to ego’s with stuff like “shot of the week” etc etc. BUT…………….. If I was Chris Kilroy, I’d probably have a shot like DJ’s Herc as my screensaver or on a t-shirt.:D
Over the several years since I joined this site, I’ve seen some amazing images, some complete amateurs become consumate professionals and the regular documentarists creating fascinating records of their ‘patch’…
It’s all good stuff and I hope Key Publishing eventually recognise the gems available in this amateur archive. I think I’ll pick up my camera more often in 2008… “G’aun yersels!”

A fine shot DJ, worthy of the title IMO, I am by far no expert on aviation photography, but i know what pleases my untrained eyes!! it is well cropped, sharp with good detail for a night shot, nowt up with that as i see it (as a viewer) i just really can’t get what is so worthy of a shot that is frankly of very poor quality, with no content in sharp focus, and suffers extreme camera shake (fair ’nuff for a landing shot from the flightdeck) by a photographer whose other stuff is of a far far higher standard!
I’m sure thousands of photographers, still scratching their heads over why their hi quality shots get rejected, log in to JP front page, see this and feel slapped in the face! It does,IMO, a bit of damage to JP to have the “shot of the week” such a poor shot, Perhaps A-Net’s absurdly OTT and ludicrous screening process (to those not bezzy pals with the screeners)has a point after all??

Photo of the week is actually chosen by the owner, Chris Kilroy. ‘Top 2 of Yesterday’ and ‘Top 2 of Week’ are chosen by views.

Sam

There are 3 reasons why this photo has so many views and so was ‘photo of the week’.
1. It’s a flightdeck shot.
2. It was taken at night time.
3. It was taken with a fisheye.
+ The overall quality.
:diablo:
That’s 4 reasons surely…? 😀

Ahh good point TDM, that could explain it, but, IMO the shot is not good enough to even be on the database, going by some of the shots that you see on here and other fora that are rejected by JP.

Sam:
I can see the attraction simply because it is a flightdeck shot, also the fact it is a fisheye shot.
But there are tons of flightdeck night time shots on JP that are well… sharp!:dev2:

I don’t think there’s too much going on in terms of artistic merit there… Looks like a fairly standard happy snap taken on a pocket digital to be honest. There’s a little suggestion of drama in the shot but that’s really down to the subject more than the photography.
An interesting enough picture but not really ‘shot of the week’ maybe the snapper is mates with that particular screener or something ?

Yeah,Jason. I agree, i also have had shots rejected that are of good/fair quality, some stuff from my recent Asia trip that are’nt in the JP database at all (even a first shot of type!!)all of at least decent quality (or at least as good as the one’s i have accepted). I was thinking there must be some sort of “artistic” merit to this shot, maybe??, that is whooshing over my head, that qualifies it as shot of the week.
