OOps… 😮

A Syrian Arab Airlines Airbus A320-200, registration YK-AKF performing flight RB-501 from Damascus to Latakia (Syria),
was climbing through FL120 out of Damascus
when the main rotor of a military helicopter clipped the upper half of the vertical stabilizer and rudder off the airliner.

The helicopter crashed, the A320 was able to return to Damascus for a safe landing.

The helicopter crew died, there were no injuries aboard the A320, the A320 received substantial damage.

According to http://avherald.com/h?article=45671063 YK-AKF may have had 200 passengers on board.
And FL 120 is a rather high level for a helicopter to operate…

That’s certainly impressive that the A320 was able to land safely. It’s quite unfortunate for the helicopter crew though. Great point by ThreeSpool – 20 crew members is very excessive. I’ll be paying attention to this story to find out more information as it comes. I don’t think this article has it’s facts straight currently.

Blimey! It’s incredible that they landed safely! A great piece of airmanship by the pilots indeed!
A sad loss for the military crew.

Brilliant airmanship on the part of the Syrianair pilots. Very sad for the heli crew and their loved ones. As if they don’t have enough problems over there at the moment:(

Wow! Kudos to the Syrian crew. That must have been an absolute b**** to control…

A happy ending for the A320 passengers and my condolences to the families of the heli victims. Although, quite how you miss an A320 at FL120 (so presumably above any Arabic weather systems) is beyond me? I won’t mention poor airmanship at such an early stage of the investigation, but it does make me wonder.

That’s quite some damage, very lucky outcome for those on the A320.

I doubt very much it had 200 people on board, it’s only certified for 180 passenger. 20 Crew seems excessive.

Holy heck. A few more feet and that bus would have span out of control! Very lucky people on board that plane. Shame for the helicopter crew though.
