Now for the trip report!
Got up at 03:45 for the 45min journey to Gatwick. A problem free check in but seemed to take an age before the gate came up. Went to gate 105 on the small pier for the normal free for all for seats, got a left hand window seat. Departed at 0632 on G-EZEG A319, a nice aircraft. Not oftern I actually have not seen the aircraft I fly in! Just a few more EZY 319’s and a couple of Excel 737’s seen.
A nice clear morning as we flew north over Croydon, London City(just 4 biz on the deck) then over Essex towards Clacton. Cloud built up over the Dutch coast and we did the normal approach to the remote runways over the docks touching down at 0817 local. A very efficent airport, through immigration, collected bags and on the deck within 20min!
The deck has not changed at all since my last visit in October. It will improve greatly if they ever finish the right side extension. Only complaint no beer in the snack barm and it didn’t even open on Tuesday. Will post log on the spotting comp thread. Weather was sunny and warm and it can be difficult not getting photos into the sun. As always I eat in the evening at the resturant next to the deck. Had chicken sate and chips plus a large beer for 12 euros. Around 20:00 caught the shuttle bus to the Etap for a early night.
After a good nights sleep was on the deck when it opened at 7am. Well after a visit to the supermarket for breakfast. It was very hot today(30oc) and my hayfeaver was bad but I survived. Checked in at 4 so I could get some airside shots. The best place found was the end of D pier where the departures went so close DC10’s/747s needed a wide angle. I was taking the 1820 EZY5108 and bear in mind that the previous days flight left 19 hours late when G-EZEH went tech! So guess what pulls up at the gate, yes EH! We start to board but get no further than the gate. After 10 min we are told there is a unknown delay! This nearly causes a riot from those pax delayed from the day before!! Luckerly its only a 20 min delay and we were not told why. Anyway we depearted of 06 at 1842! Sat on the opposite side so got a good view of Manston from 20,000ft. We arrived after a long approach at 1830 local. To cap it all I was pulled over by customs on return, the first time in 30odd flights! Overall a cheap couple of days, £35 for the flight and about the same for the hotel. A great airport for viewing 🙂 BAA take note 😡 .
