Here is another installment from my photo collection. This time from 1965 and a “Battle of Britain” air display at Tern Hill. It was a day of sunshine and showers as can be seen. There was not a vast crowd and no acres of funfair, yet it was clearly seen as a family day out with aircraft being displayed for their own sake. Security was fairly relaxed and while the static aircraft had rope barriers, these were not particularly enforced. (A Dakota wing is very handy as shelter in a rain shower). In all it was one of the most enjoyable displays I have attended. There is clearly a Meteor missing from the set because it is visible in the background in some pictures.
What looks like a V.I.P. Twin Pioneer XT610

A USAF Dakota 0-50943, presumably one actually in service at the time.

Miles Hawk Major DG590. While it was flying I noticed that the main wheels were rotating in the airstream. This surprised me as there could be scope for adverse gyroscopic effects.

Ki100 in a roughly applied paint scheme.

Mosquito TA639. At the time a number of Mosquitos were still airworthy.

BOAC VC10, apparently a type of sufficient note at the time as to be worth bringing one to an out-of-the-way venue.

A Beaver arriving. I don’t remember if it was actually taking part in the display. There are resident Whirlwinds visible (just about) in the distance.

Varsity ‘T’. I remember taking this view rather than a side-on view in order to capture the bomb aimers position.

Harvard FT375.

Jet Provost ‘V’.

Valetta ‘S’.

Javelin, a T.5 if I remember correctly, with a long queue to sit in the cockpit.

That Twin Pin XT610 was with the ETPS/A&AEE Boscombe Down at the time this picture was taken, it is now the one owned by Classic flight and was airworthy until recently.

I have scanned the pictures carefully as I am pretty certain I was at that show. No luck though.
