F – 16? Is that some sort of anti-corrosion treatment?

RE: W1048
I guess it depends on exactly which picture you are looking at, if you trawled right through all the pictures in the link I gave earlier, you will see W1048 in a variety of poses, including ‘with’ engines, and ‘without’ engines.
I think that the museum at Hendon chose to display the aircraft in a sort fo “during recovery” setting, rather than “as found”, but you have to also consider that through the years of decay in the water and subsequent lack of proper anti corrosion treatment, the museum have to be careful not to put too much strain on the fuselage, and in this case, the engine bearers.
I suppose someone will come along & say that I am wrong, but this answer is my best assessment of the situation, it is not necessarily the correct answer.

RE: W1048
I was in Hendon last week and the aircraft seems to be in worse condition than it was then. There seems to be hardly any equipmwnt inside the aircraft and the engines are no longer attached to the aircraft by any substantial means. On the pictures, the engines are clearly firmly attached to the aircraft. Why is this?

Let’s agree to disagree.
I feel exactly the same as you when I see Hendon’s Hally, but personally speaking, I would rather see her restored.
W1048 looks ‘almost’ as she did when recovered, but if you want to see clearly how she looked on recovery, follow this rather good link:-

Just my own opinion.

Sorry Halibag, but I disagree. I went to Hendon three weeks ago, and spent some very quiet contemplative moments standing next to W1048.
Displayed in her current state, I think she serves as a very pertinent reminder of the thousands of men in Bomber Command who didn’t come home. If the sight of an unrestored and flak-damaged bomber makes people stop, think, maybe wipe a tear from their eye and remember the sacrifice many young men made all those years ago, well I think that justifies keeping W1048 as she is.
I do understand and appreciate the need for such rare examples to be preserved, but while the Wellington sitting next to her is also an extremely rare machine, that aircraft really doesn’t have the same effect.

RE: Pic Of The Day-20/12/2001
I agree, there probably ARE donor parts from various RAF types keeping BBMF in the air. I got up close & personal with Spit’ BM597 a number of years ago whilst she was guarding Church Fenton’s gate & saw a number of parts that had been ‘salvaged’ to keep BBMF going, sadly, at that time, I don’t think it was policy to replace ‘New for Old’ and the nav & formation lights were simply roughly shaped bits of wood. (I think that policy was changed shortly afterwards.)
As for Hendon’s Hally. She is sitting in a sorry looking state at present & there are many folk who all feel the same, that is, she deserves to be treated better than she is at present and it is about time she was restored to her former glory (at the very least, externally). Would a petittion help?
Merry Christmas to everyone

Yes Halibag I knew that, but then there are probably parts representing most of the wartime RAF up there in ‘474!
Mentioning the Halifax wreck, I was particularly struck by it on a recent visit to Hendon, after not having been for a good few years-it really does make you think.

Yes they do indeed look very pretty, sound nice too 🙂
Here’s a little something that not a lot of folk know, and even Lancman might admire… Halifax W1048 at Hendon has provided a number of parts from her engines to keep PA474 in the air!! Yes folks, crash recovered parts too!! Horror of horrors! The reason for this was that the Hally’s engine’s were so new at the time of her demise, and upon restoration, the parts were STILL brand new looking, it was decided to put them to a good cause!
I like the thought of that.
(Especially more so as they are Halifax bits 🙂 he he he!!)

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-12-01 AT 05:47Â PM (GMT)]That picture looks very similar to some that I took at the Stoughton air show quite a few years ago. Spookily – because I don’t have a scanner I gave this picture & several others to my friend to put on disc so that I can put them on the site.

Nice picture Kabir, i have several similar shots and its always a great leveller when you see and hear the trio in formation like this.No matter how many times you see this you have to stop and take in the significance of it and what they represent historically.

Indeed, I think the old BBMF has been around for so many years now, this is actually a sight a lot of us take for granted. But, it IS one hell of a sight-who’d have thought, all these years after the war, that there would still be a Lanc and it’s little friends in our skies?
