Pic of the day March 31

good ol mad dog look all purdy in northwests new livery.

I don’t like the DC-9 all that much, but this old dog has some life left in it yet. Well done to NWA for giving and old gal like this another lease of life.

Would you believe that this DC-9 just turned 36 years old!!

Yeah, USAF DC-9’s or C-9 Nightingale’s as they’re known are used for Medevac and VIP work.

That looks great! Very nice colours, on a very nice aircraft too 😀 Speaking of DC-9’s, a USAF one flew over my school today. Anyone know what they’re used for?

Yes, if you consider all the majors. Probably by a longshot. They still have DC-9’s, DC-10’s, and 747 classics. They even still operate a few 727’s as sports charters.

I don’t see the logic spending money repainting an aircraft that is destined to become coke cans in the very near future

The dc9’s efficiency is ok, if you’re looking at the -30, -40 and -50 series. It surprises me that they meet stage 3 noise requirements. The Dc9’s are about to be retired in five years. Peter knows more about it

Even if they are renewing their fleet with A32x and A330’s they do still operate DC10 (to be withdrawn soon) and DC9’s.
I’m not sure that those are the most cost efficient !

Perhaps not, but cheaper the re-equiping en masse. New aircraft aren’t exactly cheap.

NWA seem to be holding up well considering.
I seems to me that NWA take care of their aircraft and thus they last longer and pay for themselves many times over. I mean, that DC-9 for example. MANY MANY of its kind that are younger than it are now tin cans, or waiting at a scrapyard to be chopped.

That’s a great shot. Don’t Northwest have some of, or even officially the oldest DC-9 still operating ?

I think so, and seeing that they’re willing to spend $40.000 on a new paint job on them, they seem to want to keep them going for a while yet
