[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-07-02 AT 09:31 AM (GMT)]You dont see this often these days….this a/c brings the fifth engine for another SAA B743 which was stranded at FRA. Note the cap(called thrust cap) on the 5th engine.

Pan Am also used to carry a fifth engine when it recieved its first B747s.

I think airlines used to do that a lot in the bad old days. I remeber lots of pics of Qantas and SAA.
I suppose that being in an inboard position there would not be that much of weight displacement – just some extra deadweight?

The ‘cap’ diverts the airflow through the bypass part of the engine to avoid it passing through the core. Believe it or not there is very little performance penalty when carrying a spare engine externally.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-07-02 AT 03:52 PM (GMT)]this was no test…a SAA B743 was stranded at FRA due to engine loss….this a/c carried a spare engine for it….this just happened on June 30th 2002. It carried an engine for this a/c….ZS-SKA…which got stuck at FRA the day before….ZS-SKA is an ex-Swissair B743.

What was this airtest for? – was SAA a launch customer in the a/c type involved or something?
