Greetings,
Just got back all sunburnt from the Wings Over Wairapapa Airshow in Masterton.
Great day, weather was hot, hot and very hot.
The camera I borrowed wasn’t that great but I think the pics are okay I guess.
Anyway check them out….

What was a nice touch was the tribute to Edgar Percival, with a display by the Proctor, 2 Piston-Provosts and the ungainly EP-9 Top-Dresser.
I was amazed at how quiet the Alvis Leonides radials are and how they sound very un-radial like (compared to a P & W Wasp anyway).

Thanks for the photo’s guys, brings back some wonderful memories of Wanaka last year, and flying in the Catalina – Superb.
Is the Staggerwing the one that was restored by the Croyden Aircraft Factory?
Cheers 🙂 ,
The Staggerwing was imported from Canada in 1985 after being restored there.
There were 2 there yesterday and they truly are a wonderful machines.

Excellent pics – thanks for sharing. It’s good to see the OFMC ‘planes out and about, although I’m also sad they’re not here….. 😉
I love the tank shot too!

The original BP hangar is still in use for operators to park their aircraft (Cessnas and the like), I don’t know of any plans to change that. More new hangars will be built by the Heritage Centre for some other warbird restoration companies that are moving here…exciting times ahead in the near future 🙂

Don’t know of any Heritage Centre for Masterton, but the walls have started going up for the one here at Omaka 🙂
Dave
Ooh, it must be getting quite exciting down that way now. Are there any plans to clean up the original RNZAF buildings and barracks that remain there and make it like a themed historical airfield? (ala East Kirkby or Duxford…) Or are they in private hands? I noted on my all too brief visit thast the ATC are in one of the buildings.
Does Classic Wings have it’s office actually at Omaka, or are you guys based in town (the big smoke of Blenheim)?
Sorry to go off track a bit guys

Nice to see the 504. That is where the old Warner off my Rearwin ended up!

Sweet photo of the Catalina taking off Don. Well done.
You mention the one that was lost. It was a shame but all turned out ok in the end. Someone I know still insists it was an insurance job – but I’m certain they wouldn’t have risked their lives and an old aircraft just to make money. Wasn’t there a documentary about it? Perhaps on “Sunday” or some other current affairs thing. I was in the UK when the ditching occurred.
Ooh, Peter Jackson’s lovely tank. Were you impressed by the guns? I reckon it’s awesome! It needs a German counterpart though! That’d be impressive.
DaveM2, thanks for clearing up the Hind mystery. I thought that was the case. Damn, I missed seeing the airshow on TV, was it on TV1 news? I watched most of TV3 and saw nothing – usually they cover airshows.
Hood Aerodrome looks bigger than I imagined. Is there much there in the way of historic aviation usually? I know SVAS has a Harvard, and there’s now the Old Stick and Rudder Company based on the ‘drome now, but is there any sort of museum or aviation heritage centre? Peter Norman makes more than one mention of the airfield, and its connections with No. 14 Fighter Squadron, in his excellent book Tiger Moths and Butterflies as it was/is his local airfield. Good read.
The airfield looks to be drying out too. It’s still rather green up these parts, but then it has been an unusually wet, cold summer here. The days are great now, warm and clear, but sadly the long hot stinkin tropical muggy humid Waikato nights arrived about two weeks ago. Andy, please send some of your lovely sounding cold weather.

What’s all that about 50 feet?
Last for the time being …. a couple of photos of John Bargh in an Airtractor (ag sprayer). He was doing amazing “spray” runs up and down the flight line at about 3 metres (none of this 50′ business) and as he tuned the dogleg in the middle of the aerodrome I swear his inside wingtip wouldn’t have been more than a metre off. Amazing stuff. In these two shots he’s diving in to his passes.

This little Miles Messenger was painted up in Bernard Montgomery’s personal colours – I think I have a better SLR static shot of it, not 100% sure about that though. Amazing short take-off!

Great pics TNZ! Stunning ground animation with that WW1 tank! 😎
It’s great to see those ex-Breightling team machines at the show!
I know you have more pics TNZ. Where are they. I want to see them! :diablo:
