I think that should be two turbosuperchargers (driven by the exhaust) per Wright Cyclone R-3350 engine, total 8.

Just found this group – happy days!
Please note a R-3350 TC18 is fitted with three (3) each PRT’s – power recovery turbines – each generating ~100-150 hp directlly back to the crankshaft via a hydraulic coupling.
This engine represents the zenith, or very near to it, the art of the piston aircraft engine designer – IMO.

Piston Powered aircraft are notorious for having flames coming out of the exhaust.

Power recovery turbines, 12 of ’em on the Super Connie. At least that’s what the crew told me at Prestwick when I was on board.
