Took my 400d and a 28-300 SIGMA lens, on its first outing today, and not having much experience taking aircraft, i took a few like this at Manchester, with the lens at full focal length, quite like the pic for the background colouring BUT………Obviousley the aircraft is out of focus, my thoughts are that as the camera was in SPORTS mode ie AI Servo, and the 400d used all the 9 focus points, when i really should have set it up for a centre wieghted focal point. Im on on the right tracks here………and can anyone offer me any other tips on shooting aircraft with a 400d. 😉 theyd be much appreciated. I know a betterand faster lens would be the ideal scenario but im on a limited budget:o
and the EXIF info…….

Also you were shooting wide open (f/6.3) at 300mm. Most consumer grade lenses (heck even some professional lenses) are not sharp wide open. You might try stopping down to f/8 (at ISO 400 you am guessing you will get slower 1/400, which would be plenty fast for this shot)

I’m not a Canon user so I know nothing about them, but I would say, looking at it from a general photography point of view, that you pressed the shutter button half way to lock focus on the aircraft, and then you left it for a short while before you actually took the photo.
Because the aircraft is coming towards you, the focus required will be constantly changing, so you took the photo when the aircraft had gone out of the locked focus.
Does that sound correct, or is that explaination a load of rubbish?

I’m not a Canon user, but have you tried shooting using shutter priority? For jets try the fastest speed that your lens will allow. Camera shake may have also played a part in the blurred shot. The only other advice is to stake out your local airport and practice using all the various settings.
Although, no doubt you will receive some excellent replies I would suggest a forum such as
