Picture of the day 02/12/01

Slight departure from ‘warbird ‘type pictures but i am interested to know how authentic this scheme is for a Staggerwing.

RE: Picture of the day 02/12/01

I’m having a bad day in terms of accuracy!Prince Bernhard firstly flew another D17S which had been previously attached to the American embassy. This aircraft is now appropriately with the Duke of Brabant Airforce and painted in it’s US Embassy blue and yellow livery.
The aircraft pictured above is painted to represent his later machine, marked PB1,but is NOT the original aircraft.
This means that the Duke of Brabant’s machine is one of the Prince’s original aircraft but is not painted in his personal livery, whilst N18V is painted as his personal ‘PB1’,but is in fact an imposter! It all gets very confusing I can assure you,but i think I’ve got the facts just about right.

Another nice pic Philo!
In answer to your question, yes the colour scheme is authentic. This machine is painted in the markings of a D17S which was brought to the UK for the personal use of HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. The aircraft was attached to the Allied Flight which was set up for the purpose of transporting various Generals,VIP’s etc around the UK.
One small snag with the colour scheme on the machine above is that the roundels are of the pre-1942 type and are therefore probably too early.

I agree, with an endless pot of cash a Staggerwing would have to be on the shopping list, regardless of its paint scheme.
