RE: Pictures to discuss

I’ll try and find the wesite again , Ernie Simmons bought a load of aircraft at a sale ( and a load of engines ) , he was a recluse who lived with his parents – he would not sell anything and always carried a shotgun , he also collected masses of motorbikes and cars , he shot an intruder one time and after his parents died I think a burglar shot Ernie and he died soon after , this was in 1971 , I’ll trawl the net and post the address

RE: Pictures to discuss

Great photos Dezz , I was trying to look for a website featuring her and stumbled across the site about Ernie Simmons , who bought a load of Yales , Ansons and Swordfish – without the Canadian farmers like Ernie there would be missing a few of the aircraft we see at airshows these days.
On the same subject doe’s anybody have any photos of Harry Whereatt’s Hurricane , Lysander etc ???

RE: Pictures to discuss

The Canadian Swordfish is still airworthy and yes it’s the same as was at the Abbotsford show last year. She’s based at Muirkirk,Ontario, but is not seen all that much because she is not flown on a regular basis, only for special occasions or other short periods.

Hi Yakman , obviously I was having one of my “DOH” days – these seem to happen more and more frequently these days .Does anybody know if Bob Spence’s Swordfish is still airworthy , was this the one at the Abbotsford airshow last year ???

RE: Pictures to discuss

The Japanese plane is a Kawasaki K61 Hien (Tony) , and the Swordfish looks like Bob Spence’s one currently airworthy in Canada , the strut between both ailerons is just to make sure they both move at the same time ,saves having to have 2 sets of control rods , you only have a set of control linkages for the bottom wings and the ailerons on each side are connected by a strut with swivel mounts .

Yes, the Stuka is a very real one. It is a miricle it is still complete, as I understood that a long time ago it fell from the ceiling when it was being cleaned. BW Roger

RE: Pictures to discuss

Swordfish looks a tad dodgy.

Can’t see how the aileron will function with a wing strut fixed to it
