I received a mailing from the RAF Museum Shop this morning, which included a flyer for a series of DVDs (though it doesn’t actually say DVD, but I checked online) for various ‘Top War Films And TV Series’, whihc includes ‘Piece Of Cake’!
I know lots of people were unwilling or unable to get the Canadian DVD release of this, and now it seems it’s here on Region 2, hurrah!
Googling ‘DD Home Entertainment Piece Of Cake’ found it for me, though there’s no cover image there yet; there is however a picture of the cover on the flyer, on which it says ‘Uncut Edition’. It’s rated ’12’.
Hope this is of some help/interest to someone! 😉

I think I remember reading somewhere that several former fighter pilots who flew in the battle of France, chief among them Paul Richey, actively tried to stop the series being shown, due to its highly controversial nature. Is this true?
I am not so sure about that but there was an article in the Spitfire Society magazine DCO at the time titled……
‘A Case of Pique’ 😉

I wonder why they have not made this multi region zoned, like the Canadian version. R2 limits its sales a little (unless like many DVD’s claiming to be of one region they’re secretly multi-zoned?)
I have the Canadian DVD version and love it. It’s a superb series, with great acting as well as characterisations. I think Uncle is one of the supreme characters, and Skull is also wonderful.
I’d be interested to hear from anyone who has got or has seen both UK and Canadian DVD versions – is this British one actually better quality than the Canadian release? As far as clarity, sound etc?
I think the previous “copy” that I have was the Canadian version. Haven’t watched it in a while, but I think the UK version is slightly better….

My favourite ‘goof’ from POC was during the scene when CH3- sorry, I mean ‘Christopher Hart’- is bringing his Spit down supposedly with no prop; on my (Betamax!) recordings of the original transmission, you could just see, in a long shot through some trees, the spin of the prop still happily whirring away! This was much less evident on my shop-bought VHS version though; it will be interesting to see if it shows on the DVD!
My favourite is the scene where the pilots are playing rugby (along with the dog, Riley), and the character “Sticky” comes out of one of the doors of the chateau – revealing the entire camera/sound crew in the panes of glass! 😀
Still, that’s but a tiny flaw on an otherwise excellent production!

Very good stuff. Watched everything from start to finish. What a great series..although…they used the same up close explosion WAY to many times.

LOL! Moggy- in print, and as brilliantly portrayed by Neil Dudgeon- is a wonderful character.
My DVD arrived with no fuss from Benson’s, and a month today, I’ll be able to look at it!!!

I’ve just finished watching the last episode of this – as somebody too young to watch the series when it first was transmitted, I thought it was superb.
I’ve also now twigged what Moggy C’s user name means 😀
Regards,
Dan

Now all we need is “Angels One-Five” on DVD and life is complete…..for now!
Anyone know if it’s available?
If this is the one, no, it is not available. 🙁

Just *gently* peel off the wrapping paper, then stick it back on later – she’ll never know! 😉

Brilliant, cheers daz! Mine’s on order, though it’s for the wife to give me at Crimbo time, so I’ve a while to wait before I see it!

Mine has arrived, and…..
I’m impressed!
I can’t see any flaws or imperfections in the programme itself – it appears to have transferred quite well onto DVD format, without losing any of its effect (it was shot on a different film format to usual TV productions, if I remember correctly). Picture quality is good, despite the age!
The sound – they’ve really cleaned it up! It seems pin-sharp compared to the previous versions – one scene, even without a fandabby sound system fitted to the TV, will have the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end!
I’m only going by what I’ve viewed so far – obviously have only just come in and put the DVD in the machine, but so far so very good!
As for uncut? As it says on the tin! 😉
Thank you very much, DD Video! 😀

I’ve got two versions here- two old 180 tapes where I taped it off the telly on first transmission- (on Betamax, chopping the ads out as it went along, and later transfered to VHS!) and the two single official VHS releases, each with three episodes plonked together into a single run on each tape (The ‘tween episodes jumps being a bit jarring in places) and the silly bleep in episode 4. I believe there was also a double VHS set containing, I assume, the same version. (Covers on both were…well, rubbish)
So, a decent set of the episodes (hopefully) as transmitted, but minus the ads of course, will be great!

Interestingly, the two versions of that episode I’ve seen have left the swear word in, but the Canadian (I presume) DVD version I’m sure is shorter!
The VHS copies that I got hold of (from an old chap in Dundee) must have been the original ITV airing – from 1988! 😮
