Pilots, how long are your stopovers?

Can anyone shed any light on how long a stopover would last. I realise it would depend on several circumstances, but say London to New York BA flight, how long would the crew get in New York? Also, on shorter trips, and on airlines such as Monarch and Brittania, if the flight is too long for the pilots to return on, how long would they get in the country they flew to or would they just have to sit in the aircraft on the way back?

Emirates has a lot of 24 hours stop for its cockpit crews. Included are daily flights to LHE, LGW, MAN, BXB, CDG, BKK, etc. It is not that this happening every day but all depends upon your flight roster.

Minidoh – A week in a hotel can become very expensive. We do get discounts but they still don’t bring the prices down to anything realistic. A week in a hotel can cost you what you earned in allowances being there and more. Long term expenses include marriage councelling and divorce. It really isn’t all it is het up to be and it is rare to find a bed as comfortable as your own and even if it is as comfortable, I know where I’d rather be.

No particular reason I wanted to know Hugh, just interested as at the moment the money is better long haul and so I would rather fly long haul.

The more time you spend in the airline game, the shorter you want your trips to be!

At AMM we had lots of long-haul W patterns in effect.

To save on hotel expenses for flights that only operated from a certain base once a week, we would do for instance MAN-SFB-LGW then a long bus ride home from LGW unless Ops were feeling really generous and flew us back to base. The LGW crew would then do the same flight in reverse the day after.

I think this is pretty much still the same now with FCA (as they are known now) and probably quite a few other charter airlines.

As said above it depends on many factors. When i flew for Airtours/Mytravel it could be between 18hrs and 7 days trips. The longest we ever did was on the Sydney run which was a 23 day round trip.

We get between 24 and 49 hours off down route. Not long, but more time at home which is much better. On average I get 18 days off a month.
