Piper Pocono in Poland??

Seem to remember years ago that Flypast had a photo and article on the Piper Pa-35 Pocono which had been sold to PZL for development. Some internet sources report this aircraft as broken up in 1994.

Can anyone confirm it was destroyed?

Can anyone remember the article or have a copy?

Many thanks for any info.

Avplan,

Some great photo’s and information, many thanks for the link. Have to admit it would be great to see it preserved as it has more size and presence that the few photo’s I’d previously seen would suggest.

Re: Pocono N3535; It would be interesting to know if it still exists in some form. The picture from wieesso is a good one and I would like to add it to the historic article on my website if agreeable, and have contacted him regarding that. The site is www.avplan.co.nz/library . Does anyone have any other pictures of it?

…as I already said: please ask antheii, it’s his picture – it was only a link that I had posted!

Hans, many thanks for the information. Some reports say the fuselage went to a technical school so this could only happen after that date.

Google Earth does not seem to show anything in the are now but the resolution is poor.

Hi,

When we saw it, it was “preserved” just along the side of the road. It was just a lucky find, as we were driving from Rszezow to Mielec.

The image was taken in October 1995, at which time the aircraft seemed to be intact, at least with wings etc.

Regards,

Hans

So this is your 1995 photo Hans?

Difficult to see from the photo whether it is anywhere near an airport or dumped by the side of the road. Away from an airport after fifteen years would suggest that it is not in existence. Would it be possible to do a google earth search for it?:)

Last time the problem with GE was that from Widelka only low resolution photos existed (2002 and 2004) 🙁

Neat find.
U.S. GA firms don’t seem to take a lot of photos of prototypes and development aircraft.

Some types, it seems just a handfull of photos exist and a few types are not recorded in any photos.

After years of neglect, it’s great to see GA type histories being done, like Air Britains’ excellent work on Piper and several works on Cessnas by various American authors like Thompsosn’s excellent books on Cessna development. A former Beechcraft executive has written 3 books on Bonanzas and Barons, I’d like to get them someday.

that’s mine!
But I have an “argument” with some of the other guys at Wikipedia re this airframe, why I did some googling to prove my point – and somewhat to my surprise ended up with this topic :p

POCONO
From the Indian word “Pocohanne” translated means “A stream between mountains.”

Guess it’s a special region of Pennsylvania.

Please forgive my ignorance, but were the Poconos an indian – sorry, native american – tribe or had Piper given up that type association by then?

Wieesso – Many thanks for sharing the Photo!!

Anyone know when/if it was broken up?? Difficult to tell but no sign of it on GEarth!!

Interesting that a plane that size had less than 1000 hp when the smaller King Air 90 has over 1000 hp. Got to wonder what would have happened if they’d gone to the Garret turboprop sooner – would the Jetstream have made the sales it did a decade later? would the Cessna Caravan still have won the FEDEX contract? would the larger King Airs have been able to compete with the larger cabin of the Pa35??????

Hans,

Many thanks for the information, do you remember if it was just the fuselage or if it was intact? Some sources suggest it went to a technical school as a fuselage only. Would this fit what you saw? The Flypast article would have been around 1993?

Interesting that the PA-35 was in the same class as the HP Jetstream and Shorts Skyvan but also had similar problems with engine choice and weight!

We saw this aircraft (N3535C) in the vilage of Widelka, roughly halfway Mielec and Rszezow in October 1995.

Hans
