Just finished watching an old film on one of the Greek channels that I get out here…Mega (including subtitles in Greek).
The film is one of the Sinbad series, you know the stuff, plasticine Cyclops and a baby duck with two eagle heads on it….oh, and polystyrene rocks to throw around…
Any way there was a particularly energetic swashbuckling bit and I got to wondering what the ‘ell is swashbuckling ? and more to the point, once its buckled, can can your swash be straightened and used again ?
Over to you
Cheers
Gary (who said I look like Errol Flynn ?)

Weapons are prohibited on merchant vessels, end of story.
Start killing Pirates just because they ARE Pirates and I would fear for the 200 hostages currently held by same Pirates.
These attacks and hi jackings are taking place in a million square miles of ocean through which pass over 90,000 vessels a year. Last year about a hundred were attacked, which makes it a miniscule problem in terms of insurance and in no way jutifies a convoy system.
I stated that the ships should be manned by a couple of troops with their weapons of choice. That is not prohibited.
Size of the patch doesn’t make it less of a crime, it does make a difference to the insurance.
They need to be shown that this cannot be allowed, they need blasting out of the water. It would only take a few examples to make them realise. Just like the USM corp in Sierra Leone, a head shot to the leader of the baddies. No more problems.

Where did it all started? does any body know except CNN/BBC/FOX ranting?
Somalis say illegal fishing by foreign trawlers drove them to piracy
I strictly believe, US is finding a pretext to attach Somalia just like Iraq/Afghanistan.

Q ships
Being polite seems ineffective. Reduce the job activeness. Send out a handful of tempting tagets with some 20mm cannon or similar on board and shred anyone who has a go at them. Once they stop coming home they’ll not be so keen.

Even small-arms? That does surprise me.
Start killing Pirates just because they ARE Pirates…
Not really sure I understand your argument here (although I take the point about the hostages) are you suggesting that shooting at pirates would somehow be prejudiced against these pirates who are only pirates because of the piracy that they carry out?
I agree that itβs only a small problem now, and so far seems to be being carried out as a relatively civilised ‘business’, but if it is as lucrative as it seems to be for the pirates, what is to stop it growing until it is a very big problem?

What are the rules governing the carrying and use of weapons by merchant vessels in international waters? And what about when docked in a foreign port?
I would have thought it was legal for a captain and crew to take any means necessary to protect themselves and their vessel.
I seem to remember that when merchant ships were used to carry nuclear fuel to-and-from the UK and Japan they were armed with 40mm Bofors guns to discourage any act of piracy!

I say use them for target practice.
Commit a crime – expect to get hosed. The word will soon get around.

Didn’t the Indian Navy also send some pirates to Davy Jones’ locker a few weeks ago?
The mother ship was destroyed, no mention of casualties.

I believe it’s called political will……..
Holy Mackerel, I’m up at this unearthly hour, watching breakfast telly, and the US Navy have just done so. Skipper rescued, bad guys gone.

I believe it’s called political will. The first foreign war the US fought was against the Barbary Pirates and it cost us a lot, both in gold and lives. But, after it was over they left us alone for over 200 years. I think it is time to get tough on them again and let them know that we will no longer tolerate that behavior. The problem is you have to kill them, and the politicians in the free world don’t like that option.

RE: Pirates
SWASH, verb. (old) To make a noise: SWASH-BUCKLER or SWINGE-BUCKLER= A sworder good at a lively peal on his opposite target; therefore, by implication, a ruffler, bully, Hector. Phrase dating back to 1560.
I’m sure if your buckle ever gets swashed, they have a ointment for it but I don’t think it’s covered under BUPA:-)
Why don’t my smillies work!?!:'(
OH that one did!!
