PL-965 & powerplant.

Having a nice read of feb’s flypast explaining of the new power plant for pl965 it’s original engine it had back in 1945 merlin 70.!!

A very nice find to have it’s original equipment.:D

Is there a serial number on the block which correspondes to this particular aircraft & do the cylinder heads match or do these not have serial numbers?

What im asking is what makes this “it’s original” is it totally complete as it was in 1945 or just the block?

Still nice picture of it stripped down i did love it in pink & when it just came back fron the states in it’s lovely blue colour after the paint job.

I do miss not seeing this at Breighton as this was just up the road from here.:(

Do the cylinder heads match the block do these have serial numbers to prove it’s totally original?

Im not doubting it is just interested how you know for sure it is “original”

Where are the specification plates to match all this engine up?

As with engines parts get robbed to fix others as do wings and panels.:D

Apart from replacement rocker covers and minor items such as ignition harness, plugs etc, its the original engine fitted in 1945.

Don’t forget new pipes,hoses, fittings, ags,etc

Im sure the fuel pump and carb have changed since 1945 as well, not to mention seals, gaskets, the CRMs, pistons, rings etc.

Surely a first for a rebuilt Spit? flying with its original engine?

Will look really nice when it gets back from painting.

Apart from replacement rocker covers and minor items such as ignition harness, plugs etc, its the original engine fitted in 1945. Its actually a 1943 unit having been overhauled by Rolls-Royce and re-issued to the RAF prior to installation in PL965 in 1945.
