Planespotting at Heathrow and Gatwick

Hi guys,

I’m over here staying in london for a while and want to get a good day or so of planespotting at Heathrow and Gatwick.

I live very close to Melbourne airport in Australia and getting a good vantage point around the perimeter is no problem.

I’m guessing over here it would be a bit harder to get that close to have a good view.

If anyone knows where i would be able to get a good view and not get hassled it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Is the Heathrow visitors centre still open?

Apparently, every sign to the Heathrow Visitor’s Centre has been removed, so I’m guessing not.

I was there today, but I didn’t think to go and check.

Thanks Guys,

Thats fantastic. I’ll have to wait for a nice day now!

Also would it be easier to walk to these spots or drive? I’ve got a car so is it worth driving or easier to catch the train?

At Gatwick it depends which end of the runway. If they’re using 26L (terminal end) it’s just a short walk from the terminal, and you can get shots at the end of the runway with no troubles.
If they’re using 8R it’s a long walk (though there may be buses) down that end, or to the crash gate roughly half way down.

Heathrow – If they are landing on runway 27L you can get landing shots from Myrtle Avenue without any hassle. If on 27R there is an unofficial area by the BA Maintenance area but you may get moved.

If it is a weekend and you just want to spot and take numbers most people go to the Heathrow Airport Visitors Centre. It is OK for spotting but not good for photography.

Enjoy your visit.

I live close to Tulla but i’ve done all my pilot training at Essendon.

I guess there’s no way of getting as close over here in London to get a good spotting view as it is in Melbourne, judging by the number of replies. 🙂
