I’ve been watching two films. One is called Threads, a TV program filmed by the BBC in the 80’s and The Day After, an American film filmed in a similar vein.
Both films show the build up, destruction, survival and aftermath of a Nuclear War.
These films got me thinking. What if a Nuclear war loomed. Lets say you had three months to prepare and when war comes you and your home are lucky enough to have survived the attack. Outside is destruction, fallout, death. How would you prepare and how would you survive?
I did some research and it appears radiation is not so deadly as once thought. Initially radiation is deadly and fatal. So the first few days you have to stay indoors. After several weeks radiation has decayed sufficiently that heavy clothing will protect you but inhaling radioactive dust will still kill. After 6 months it would be relatively safe to move and work outdoors. After this period your main challenges are general survival.
So the premise is this;
1. What would you do to prepare for survival?
You have to take into account personal finances, time scales and practicalities of doing so.
2. How would you survive the first two weeks?
3. How would you survive the first 6 months?
4. What then?
When I started to think about this myself I started to realise the difficulty is in the small things, the detail not what appears the biggest problems radioactivity, death and destruction.

We all have a breaking point when Armageddon strikes, but please don’t make it any worse for yourself and increase your suffering by heading to Wales..

I’d chuck a few things in the car (including the 56 litre mini-bowser filled with extra fuel) and head for the western edge of Wales

It would be a pleasure Moggy.
Edited to add I think that might have come out wrong.

Plenty of stuff on ‘survival’ all over the Internet, usually led by less-than-bright members of the NRA who seem to believe that the more guns and ammo they can collect in a bunker the more likely they are to survive radiation sickness / ebola virus, or whatever has caused the armageddon.
Me?
I’d chuck a few things in the car (including the 56 litre mini-bowser filled with extra fuel) and head for the western edge of Wales at as economical a speed as possible and the recirc on (Nuclear) or Northern Scotland (nasty biological)
It’d probably do no good. But at least it would be positive.
If Kev has adequate supplies of insulin and a really decent malt handy I might stop by to pick him up.

Life in a shelter? I think I’ll pass. I read General Sir John Hackett’s books on the next truly great unpleasantness in the 80’s when they came out. I seem to remember something about RAF Jaguars bombing Russian shipping in the Republic of Ireland and the graphic depictions of what happened to the members of Aldridge Sailing Club who were unfortunate enough to be on the water when Birmingham had a facelift.
I don’t think survival of anything more than a limited, battlefield type of nuclear exchange is worth considering. If the world does go mad (madder than it is now) and we throw the concept of MAD out of the window then I think we probably deserve nothing more than extinction. As for myself? A nice drop of whisky and 300 units of insulin will ensure that I suffer nothing more painful than going to sleep.

Where is the fun in that? You can always take them into your shelter with you, though you could be choosy 🙂
Anyway, Cambridgeshire would probably be ground zero as there are a lot if bases around the area…
On an even brighter side Tony, just think of all those students at Cambs Uni, who would possibly graduate and become future Politicians, would be Nuked. 😀
