Just had a look at the plans on Duxford’s website for the contents of the new Superhangar or ‘Airspace’
http://www.iwm.org.uk/duxford/airspace/plan.htm
Is it me or does it all look rather packed together ?

It does not seem a massive increase in area that I first imaganed. I would perfer to see the RE8 on the deck. Its not a massive aircraft but as rare as they get, surely somewhere on the ground could be found? What about the Hermes it seems neither inside or outside! Are they just not sure if it will get under the doors?

If you want to put an Aeroplane under cover at DX, It would stand a better chance if you painted “Stars & Bars” on it first.
Talking of mainstays of the 60s, the Vickers Varsity, if memory serves me, was the longest, or one of the longest serving training Aeroplanes in the RAF. How many of those are left, let alone under cover. It would be better if people who develop these new buildings have a better understanding how Aeroplanes move on the ground. NOT VERY WELL. I can remember a time, not many years ago when Duxford still had that 1940s – 50s feel to it, now it seems as though they just want to turn it into a herd them in and stack em high theme park.
Still, this is just my opinion.

Does this mean the Shackletons got a reprieve from the reaper then?

Oh of course David I had forgotten about that aircraft, still didn’t know the IWM were purchasing it.

Guy Black has the mortal remains of a DH.9 from India.

Were the hell have they suddenly got a DH9 from? The only one I know in this country is the DH9A at Hendon. Is this a replica they have acquired?

Ashley,
Thxs for the clarification.
Its strange then, that the CF100 is the only ‘Commonwealth’ aircraft in the collection, excluding the Lancaster, which of course is also an Avro Canada product.
Also odd though – no Vampire, Meteor, Hunter, which after all were the mainstays of the RAF throughout the 50’s and 60’s
Cheers

It does look rather busy doesn’t it but it does get them undercover… good stuff…but hard to photograph for sure.
What does the future hold for the remaining airframes on display outside? The Britannia, VC10. BAC1-11 etc..what’s the life expectancy of a large airframe in the great outdoors these days?

Thanks for the confirmation… 🙂
Which end is the conservation area planned to be? I know it is the front end of the hangar, but the plans do not really show which end is intended to be the front.
Thanks

Bruce…although the AirSpace page does not actually refer to this, the project is intended to showcase both British AND Commonwealth aviation…hence the inclusion of the Canuck.
The plan displayed only covers the area in which the static, restored aircraft will be displayed…as Glenn says, there is will be a substantial conservation area on one side of the Hanger…intended to include the Victor and the Shackleton…
Hope this helps!

Hmm
Its marked up as the History of British Aviation.
What the hell has an Avro CF100 Canuck got to do with it??
Has someone seen the ‘Avro’ and assumed it must be British??

There are a number of aircraft moving in from other hangars; I’m wondering whether the Victor and / or Shackleton may be lined up for other hangars? I understand that the height of the Victor’s tail would be an issue, or perhaps she’s destined for a full strip down in hangar 5 in the medium term?
By: gdenney - 29th October 2003 at 12:45
In the early draft plans, the Victor was placed in the conservation area of the hangar. The planned layout does not look any bigger than the existing footprint of Hangar 1 so has the “conservation” area been excluded from this layout?
The website still states that
visitors will be able to view this vital conservation and restoration work taking place
so I guess this area will be planned later on.

Yes, good point about the Victor, that is something that has been “promised” for some time. Not to mention the poor old Shackleton – makes my blood boil.

hi all
Looks like its the end for the only surviving mk.1 victor then it was to go in the new ‘superhanger’ but i guess its not

Will there be any room for the public?
By: andrewman - 29th October 2003 at 11:43
Does look a bit packed but its better than any of them being outside.
