Please, can anyone tell me when Lancaster JB276 was built?

I suppose the number could be JB278. I’m pretty confident the last digit is a 6 though.

If anyone can add any operational history, that would be even better.

Many thanks
Mike

Incredible what you can find on the internet sometimes:

http://www.john-lowrie.com/103_squadron.html

Virtually a complete combat history for Lancaster JB276 including details of the men that flew each mission!

The details in my first post came from ‘Lancaster – Story of a Famous Bomber’ by Bruce Robertson. The other information is from ‘Bomber Command Losses 1943’ by W.R.Chorley.

Lancaster BIII JB276 lost on operation to Kassel.

Took-off at 17:58 on 22/10/1943 from Elsham Wolds. Crashed 21:30 on 22/10/1943 at Wetschen some six kilometres east of Diepholz.

Two of the seven crew survived to be taken POW; I’ll post their names later when I have more time.

From ‘Avro Lancasteer – The Definitive Record’ by Harry Holmes, I get the following:
JB276 delivered to 103 Sqn on 9 Sept 43. Lost on a raid to Kassel, 23 Oct 43 with 91 hours on the clock.
JB277 delivered to 103 Sqn on 11 Sept 43.
JB278 delivered to 103 Sqn sometime in Sept 43. Lost on 25 Apr 44 with 322 hours – ditched in the North Sea either from or to Karlsruhe.
JB279 also to 103 in Sept 43, but again without a day specified.

I expect there’s more info to be had elsewhere.

The Definitive record book by Holmes says that range delivered June – Dec 1943.
It shows them both with 103 Sqn Sept 43.

276 lost 23 Oct 43 with 103 Sqn attacking Kassel.
278 lost 25 Apr 44 with 103 Sqn attacking Karlsruhe.

You can request the aircraft movement cards from RAF Museum.
