Which Duxford Show was it where she landed a bit heavily and bounced in rather dramatic style before coming down perfectly safely. Was there something afterwards about not landing on the grass in future?

…or Alec Henshaw atempting a barrel roll at Flying Legends! 😉

Yes, they’ve had a lot of trouble with wind (!!!) over the years! She’s been off the runway a few times, nearly always when a gust of crosswind gets her. Sometimes things are okay, and other times, it can screw up the undercarriage-at least once she’s ended up on jacks after such an incident, so I guess the BBMF have a very good stock of Lancaster fretting clips!
The trouble is, the Lanc wing is ridiculously efficient, and at the low weights it’s operated at these days, it’ll float down a runway forever if you let it. It just will not land! So, you’re in that situation, in a tailwheel aircraft, and along comes Mr Crosswind…

I can remember seeing the Lanc ‘landing’ (loose term here) at North Weald one display were there must have been a local x wind which caught them by surprise. She came down on one leg heavily and skewed to her left rapily, resulting in the leg looking as if it was about to fold under the side pressure and the wingtip coming nevously close to the deck. She managed to snap straight and roll to a halt whereupon the whole of the BBMF ground crew rushed to inspect before she was taxied off.
I know the crew were a tad shaken ( understatement) as my Brother-in-law was nav that day and I spoke to him shortly afterwards.

I saw the Lanc do it’s famous cross-country routine at Mildenhall years back-THAT was fun to see!
I never did get that pair clean after that…

Hi Patb,
I think the landing incident you refer to was at Flying Legends in 1997.I was surprised to see a B17 bounce so well!I seem to remember one of the commentators dryly saying “‘Boing!’ said Zebedee” whilst Sally was still in mid-bounce.I don’t think I’d have been able to say anything at that moment meself,as I was sure I was witnessing a certain crash.
