Hi,
My dad recorded this long ago…………. it’s the best Spit video I have seen!
It starts off with the hanger doors openning and Mk IX MH434 is rolled out (with the noise of a merlin flying overhead), the narator starts off with the with the Schnieder races, then the RR ‘R’ engine, S6, Bulldogs of 43 squadron, then (really nice footage). Then the Hawker Demon, Kestral engines…..
Then the RR Gosshawk, the Supermarine 224 fighter, Hurricane, Defiant and then the Spitfire.
It goes through the B of B, the marks and Seafire….. At the end of the video a pilot does a walk around on ‘434’, starts, takes off and does some flying over lovely english countryside then lands.

The first scene……….
So what do I have? and can I get it on DVD???
cheers,
-John

One way of finding it is to go to www.nlf.no, click on the aircraft silhouette marked “motorfly”, then click on “terminliste” to see what’s going on. Unfortunately nothing more this year!

Tusen takk TJ,

I can add some more info to this one- this documentary was shown on the BBC on a weekday morning as part of a series they called ‘Wings Week’ in the early 1980s. There was this Spitfire docu, an equally superb one about the Lancaster, the ‘Night Bombers’ colour film, one about the Shackleton (I think) and one about the Red Arrows. (John Blackwell was Red Leader in the film, I seem to remember)
The Spit, Lanc and Night Bombers progs were taped for me (on Betamax!) when I was a kid, and I still have them today, on VHS and now on home-made DVDs.
Brilliant, brilliant documentaries.

That could be the one TJ,
I have had it for at least 15 years.
I guess you don’t have any information on airshows in Norway? (I always find out the monday after at work!) It’s probably all over for this year anyway!
cheers,

Wonder if I might have seen this film some 20 odd years ago. Is it Neil Williams pre-flighting and flying the a/c on this occation?

They went into receivership, bought by Simply Media and reincarnated as Simply Home Entertainment, try http://www.simplyhe.co.uk, although I couldn’t find reference to the program you’re after. Good luck 🙂
Thanks ianjc,
no, it’s not in their list, maybe I’ll see how much it costs to put it on a disc (although copyright might be a problem if it’s done by a professional place).
cheers,
John

Don’t know if DD are still there, but worth a try, either by ‘phone or googling them.

It’s a documentary simply called “Spitfire”. It’s available on VHS from Amazon.
It’s a good wee film – especially for the last ten or so minutes.

Yep that’s the video NevH, and you are right (Phantom phixer) about 434 looking tail heavy but it looks like he’s slowed down while he flys past the camera on a hill.
The second flypast is better when he’s got a bit more speed.
I’ll look forward to getting the details Nev! (thanks)
cheers,
-John
P.S.
I bought a ‘The Story of the Spitfire’ (‘The War File’) DVD a couple of years ago, it is really crap! Badly produced & really badly edited, a complete waste of money.
The box even has “The difinitive documantary of the Supermarine Spitfire” printed in large print on the cover!

I used to have that video. Was rather good from what I remember as well.
I always thought that MH434 looked a little tail heavy in those sequences as though she hadnt been trimmed out properly, or maybe she was slowed right down for the camera ship?
Although as a non-pilot, and as I havn’t seen the footage for many years Im ready to stand corrected. 😀

…you have the same video as I have. I know what you mean about the final section, some lovely soundtrack of the merlin, as ‘434 climbs up through the clouds, and then back down on the deck, with a few shots of the view from the cockpit.
I am at work (oops), but when I get home this evening will look up the producer’s details and serial number of the VHS – you can then contact them online (if they are still in business) to see whether they do a DVD.
