Plymouth sound propeller find

interesting

I gave my main crash notes away when i left for canada, but there was i think an a/c i couldnt identify that hit a barrage ballon cable on rame head
but from the piece that was found on land it was pretty sure it was an ‘earlyish’ mark spitfire
( but they didnt have a merlin x )

As a random …..
i saw the bomb fusing panel plate from the 109 after it was found and brought up in about 2000ish

The Divers report said found 200 yards of Cawsand bay.That sounds a little close for a ditching.

never heard of a whitley in plymouth sound

i heard of a lanc, mosquito, hurricane, sunderland, 109, 217

but never a whitley

and the was a wellington but well outside plymouth sound and it was a radial engine type

most likely as suggested trawled up elsewhere and dumped ?

i recall there was a whitley mentioned in 276 or harrowbeer records 18 may 1942 but thought that was off cornwall

maybe a bit clearer location of find might help ?

or is this the 109 prop refered to here in cawsand bay

but from memory i think there was a halifax way further out coming back from the 1941 brest raids ?

It is more likely from a Whitley as so many used the Merlin X. Could the prop be available? I’m still looking for a hub for our Whitley

The propeller is almost certainly from a Whitley, but there’s a slim possibility it is from a Merlin-engined Wellington. Has anyone any records which show a Whitley being lost in the area?

Of course, it is possible that the prop was found much further out in the English Channel in fisherman’s nets and dumped in the Sound on the way back. The GU (gear unit) number will correspond with the main engine number so it is from a Merlin X, s/n 16755.
