Pobjoy Engines

A friend at the flying club started a discussion about building a Comper Swift and the subject got around to engines and availability off, so I wondered if anyone knows how many are still around and the possibility of getting one I can then go back and say start building as it would be great to have one based at the airfield (Derby that is)
Thanks
Ken

For those of us not familiar with the Arden Trust what do they have in the collection if you don’t mind me asking?

I don’t know why I should be so minded but there’s something about the Pobjoy engines that makes them rather attractive to me. Maybe it’s living near, and visiting, the pre-war home of both Comper’s and Pobjoy’s at Hooton Park that is a factor?

It bothers me not that people sit on these caches of stuff – it usually surfaces to see the light of day sooner or later. What I do object to is the owners of such caches alluding to their great value whilst, at the same time, storing them in deplorable and destructive conditions such that the percieved value decreases by the week. Utter hypocrisy.

However, the glimmer of hope with the Arden collection is that the aforementioned son may have realised both the value and storage conditions and is managing the collection better than his predecessors. Let’s hope for all those Pobjoy (and Swift and Scion owners) out there that this collection of Pobjoy engines can be properly assessed and be distributed to those who want or need them in the not-too-distant future.

I always remember watching Joe Austin at PPS fitting locking wire to a Pobjoy on a bright red Comper Swift during the early 80’s whilst I worked at Booker.
It might be worth asking them whether they have any documentation or spare parts.

scion

Looks a big effort, looks and sounds good. Gives inspiration!
Pity it’s in NZ could do something similar in UK. Any contacts over here?
Your hands will be full for your next project.
Keep things posted.

Ex Brat
1966 me 207th, but didn’t finish.
As to Cascade I agree, probably Niagara or Cataract components. But how they organised the direct drive I don’t know. Like all things Pobjoy info is somewhat scarce.
It’s hard enough getting data and parts for our Cataract III rebuild. We’ll have to keep looking!

Pobjoy 734

I am sorry but I enter the thread on an irregular basis.

Our first engine has been running at the Blenheim airshow and you can see a video of it on the Jem Aviation facebook / website

materials for the next 2 are being ordered and these should be on the way for the next few months.

The first 3 are for projects we have in hand and hopefully the swift will not be too long.

You may guess from my avatar what the next project may be.

We’ve had loose contact with the Arden family, our experience follows most. Unwelcoming!
Any contact with RAF Halton “Ex Brat”?

My manners deserted me, civil aero, in December last, in that I neglected to thank you for answering my question. I now hasten to do so, as well as to apologise for my delay of nearly five months in so doing.

We have started a small production run of restored Pobjoy engines and these are the first 2. We will probably need 3 of them but reasonably hope to have 4 and perhaps even 5.

Evening Scion, any update on your mini-production line. I’m in need of some parts for my Cataract rebuild, I could do with some info.

A real enthusiast would buy it – but remember, it wasn’t much of a plane pre-WW2

I know that it’s not Pobjoy (yes, Salmson – I’ve slapped my wrist for thread drifting!) but can you comment on the state then of the Surrey Flying Services A.L.1? The last photograph I saw of it – which I believe to be several decades old – indicated it then to be in a sorry state. I doubt that this state has improved, but you may be able to say, civil aero, whether its state – when last you saw it – was the same or worse.

Worse by a long way, no fabric , the engine was very badly corroded / rusty and missing some parts ( Push rods / Plus / etc ) The steel work in the fuselage was not much better. The family don’t want to and don’t need to sell the aircraft / engines or parts…. But they are in a much better building…!

With regards to the stuff at Heavitree. I think it is the owners unreal expectations of the various items monetary value’s that is the main reason nothing much has shiffted from there, apparrently many years ago some one bought a very decrepid Cirrus engine from them & paid something like £20,000-£25,000 for it “if you believe what the owners tell you that is”.

Bob T.

In the mid 1980’s we went and got a Cirrus from Bert for the BA Cirrus Swallow, it was in mint condition and it was still in it’s factory stand. I think we paid £1200. All the aircraft and parts have now moved to a very nice building ( We went back about 8 to 10 years ago, the son wanted us to put a value on what was left )

Sorry, I did not mean to include the larger image.

Please Mod excuse me.

Whether you did or not I am sure none of us following this thread are likely to complain.

If you had visited the ‘storage’ facility at Heavitree – you’d see why these items are in such poor condition.

If you haven’t already done so, you might find it interesting, Ex Brat, to read some of the earlier threads on this forum concerning Mr Arden’s aeroplanes and the famous – or should that be infamous – barn at Heavitree. I think that these will put in context the sentiments which you expressed this moning.

Another radial engine “in development” was the Webster Whirlwind. One was fitted to a FRED so guess it would be on the right power range for a Comper Swift replica……… Any news on this one..??
